FolioTally – Reading Log
Track papers and PDF pages
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Read in your usual PDF app and record what you have read in FolioTally.
FolioTally is a personal reading log for papers and other PDF documents on iPhone and iPad. Add titles manually, select PDFs in Files, or add a whole folder with its subfolders. Your reading list preserves the folder structure. Identical PDFs share the same reading progress, even when they appear in more than one folder.
YOUR READING LIST
• Organize papers as unread, started or completed.
• Tap a linked paper's title to open its PDF in a reader app.
• Tap the checkmark to mark a paper as read. FolioTally records any pages you have not logged yet. If the length is unknown, enter the total page count first.
• Tap the green checkmark again to mark the paper as unread. Your recorded pages remain in the log.
• Use the button beside each paper to edit its title and other details.
YOUR READING PROGRESS
• Log page ranges in the app, or share a PDF to FolioTally to create an entry.
• Backdate, edit or delete reading sessions.
• See distinct pages read today, this week, this month and overall. A separate total also includes repeated pages.
• Back up and restore your log and folder structure as JSON. Export sessions as CSV for your own analysis. Backups do not include PDF files.
You confirm what you have read. FolioTally does not automatically track your reading position or monitor other apps. Page numbers refer to PDF pages starting at 1; weeks start on Monday.
On iOS 26 or later and iPadOS 26 or later, linked PDFs can open in the default app selected in the system. Earlier supported versions show an app chooser. You can also set FolioTally to show the chooser every time.
Your log stays local, with no account, ads or analytics. File providers, system backups and exports you choose may transfer data. A cloud file provider may need an internet connection to make a PDF available. Original PDF files stay in their existing location.
Up to 500 MiB per PDF. The share sheet handles one PDF per action. New PDFs in imported folders and subfolders are added automatically while FolioTally is open and when you return to the app. File links must be selected again after restoring a backup. Locked PDFs can be added as manual papers.
