A Cup of English is a calm word game for learning English: an arrow-word puzzle (the Scandinavian-style crossword) where every answer is an English word. Read the short clue, type the answer with your phone's own keyboard and watch the grid fill up letter by letter.
Clues in your language
Choose the language of the clues: English (short definitions and synonyms), Japanese, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese or Turkish. The answers are always in English, so you learn the words in context whatever your first language. Switch at any time from the home screen.
750 puzzles, the most useful words first
• Words chosen from the New General Service List (NGSL), a research-based list of the most frequent English words
• Three levels: Easy (the 1,000 most frequent words), Medium (the next 1,000) and Hard (advanced words)
• Every level starts with 8×7 grids that grow up to 12×9; big grids zoom in on the word you're typing
• More than 3,300 words, each with a clue in all seven languages
A new puzzle every day
The Daily Puzzle is the same for everyone. Finish it to unlock Tomorrow's Clue: one clue from tomorrow's puzzle, already in your pocket.
Keep your streak
Play every day to grow your streak. Miss a day with an Eraser in hand and your streak is protected automatically. You earn one on day 3 and then every 7 days, and you can hold up to 2. If you like, we send a short reminder at 8 pm on days you haven't played.
Your word notebook
Every word you solve goes into your notebook and moves through five mastery stages, from Met to Mastered. Spaced repetition brings each word back when it's time to review. The home screen shows how many of the 1,000 most frequent words you have met.
Quick Review
Two-minute sessions with up to 8 words that are due. If a word won't come to you, the answer is shown gently. No penalty sounds, no pressure.
Page complete
After each puzzle, the completion card lists the words you learned with their meanings. Tap a word to hear it with your device's text-to-speech.
Levels and titles
Level up as you play and collect titles along the way, from Rookie Pencil to Word Legend.
Hints when you need them
• 3 free hint credits every day
• Reveal one letter for 1 credit, or a whole word for 3
• Earn more by finishing the Daily Puzzle (+1), reaching a new level (+2) or, only if you choose to, watching a rewarded video (+2)
Calm by design
Cream paper, red arrows and blue handwriting. Soft pen sounds and gentle haptics. Puzzles work offline (rewarded videos need a connection). No account, no sign-up: your progress stays on your device.
Free to play
A Cup of English is free. Ads appear only when you choose to watch one for extra hint credits; nothing interrupts the puzzle. There are no in-app purchases.
