Games played by ear with VoiceOver: bowling, cards, dice, Metropolis, archery… Alone against bots or online with other players. Free.
AudioGameAccess is a platform of games played entirely by ear, made for blind and visually impaired people. Sounds guide you, and VoiceOver tells you everything else.
The games:
- archery, in three levels, and bowling;
- Feather Flight, a skill game;
- card games: Ninety-nine, Crazy Eights, Golf, President, a colour card game, and a car race played with cards;
- dice games: a five-dice game, with its combinations to fill, and Farkle;
- board games: Parcheesi and Camembert Culture, a general knowledge quiz;
- hangman, Sea Battle and a word game on a grid of letters;
- Métropole, a city-building game where you are the mayor.
Every game has its own manual, in English and in French.
On iPhone, two ways to play:
- with VoiceOver, the whole screen becomes the game: you play with gestures, without looking for buttons;
- without VoiceOver, real buttons, cards and dice to touch, in large text and high-contrast colours for visually impaired players.
Play with others: online, open a table, invite your friends or play against bots. Chat in writing and by voice, send private messages, keep a friends list and follow the leaderboards. A game can be saved and resumed later.
Offline, every game can be played alone or against bots, with no account.
To play online, create a free account with your email address. Other players never see it. You can block or report a player, and delete your account from the app.
3D sound on headphones places every sound around you.
I'm a totally blind iPhone user who uses Voiceover. I stumbled upon Audio Game Access while searching for blind accessible games in the Apple Games app. I LOVE EVERYTHING about the app! My ONLY suggestion is that for the offline games, PLEASE add the ability to pass one device back and forth between players! Let's face it: If you're on an airplane, and you're playing, say, 99, against a bunch of bots, your friend sitting in the seat next to you might say something like, "What game are you playing?" You'd say, "Ninety-nine." They'd say, "Can I join in on the fun?" With pass-and-play, they could! The user could type the name of each player, and the device could be passed back and forth between them! No Internet connection required, and you'd DEFINITELY encourage in-person competition between players! But other than that, GREAT APP! Looking forward to seeing what updates you will bring to it!
Developer Response
Thank you so much, Angela! We're thrilled you found us and enjoy the games. Pass-and-play is a great idea, and we've passed it on to the whole team. More games and updates are on the way. Have fun!
- New game in the board games: Camembert Culture, a general knowledge quiz. Walk your pawn round a wheel, cell by cell, win the wedges of the six categories by answering questions, then come back to the centre for a last question.
- Play Camembert Culture offline against 1 to 5 bots, or at the casino with up to 18 players, each for themselves or in teams; at the casino, a free answer is given on voice chat or typed, and a player from another team judges it.
- Over 8,400 questions, in French only for now. Your games won count in the Leaderboards.
- With VoiceOver, swipe one finger up to move your pawn ahead, down to turn it about, left or right to turn it, and double tap to throw the die or confirm; during a question, swipe up or down to choose a proposition.
- The game's Actions give the look, to explore the wheel without moving your pawn, back to the pawn, the question, the anecdote, the pawns, your wedges and the nearest one, your position, the players, and at the casino typing your answer and the right answer for the judge.
- The wheel is drawn for players who can see, with the question and its propositions under it, or beside it on iPad. Without VoiceOver, double tap a cell to walk your pawn there, or a proposition to choose it; the "Throw the die, or confirm" button does the rest.
- The bowling is illustrated: a wooden lane, pins with their red collar, your bowler seen from above in the pose of the moment, the ball and a dotted line to your aim.
- In the bowling, a card shows how to throw: the three steps, Force, Swing and Release, the current one in yellow, the sentence saying what to do, the force bar, and each gesture beside what it changes. Players who can see can play without the manual.
- In the bowling, Frankie the announcer reacts as soon as the pins fall, even before the result of your ball is said.
- In the board games, every step of a pawn is now the sound of a real pawn pushed across the board, a different one each time, heard in the middle of the table for everyone.
- Private tables are better kept: they no longer appear in the list of tables for players who are not invited, and Friends and Present players only say "at a private table".
- An invitation to a private table works only once, a player the host has blocked can no longer get in, even when invited by someone else, and nobody can invite during a game.
- Making a table private now says that those already seated stay and others sit only by invitation; if you are not the table's administrator, the game tells you that only the administrator can make it private or public.
- Going back from a table's page, with the Back arrow or by swiping from the edge, no longer leaves a page that does not respond: the table's page comes back with its menu open.
- If your turn comes while Control Center or Notification Center covers the game, a bicycle bell calls you back.
