Terrane - Environmental Synth

Field Recording & Live Harmony

Free

Terrane makes sound from the place you are in. The device you hold habitually draws attention away from your surroundings. Terrane amplifies them so you can engage in deep listening. It listens through your iPhone microphone, a headset / AirPods microphone, or your Apple Watch, and plays the room back to your headphones transformed. A fan, rain, traffic, footsteps, a quiet room. The material is whatever is around you, so no two sessions are the same. GRANULAR The last twenty seconds, held in memory and played back as fragments. Three scenes: Trace, where events become overlapping trails; Drift, where the room becomes a moving texture; Suspension, where held sound becomes a sustained object. FIELD The room, heightened. Sweep a band of frequencies to bring parts of it forward, add space, or switch to Neutral for a clean field recording. Listen live or a few seconds behind. HARMONIC Pitches pulled out of the room become a slow soundbed in the scale you choose: pentatonic, Japanese scales, modes, whole tone or chromatic. The root is found in what you are hearing, or set it yourself. The room answers back: a tap plucks a string, rain lets water drops fall, a footstep swells a low note, and the room itself can sit underneath. MOTION In every mode, sound can move spatially around your head. HOLD Stop taking in new sound and keep playing what is there. RECORD Save what you hear as a 24-bit WAV file, with an optional count-in. Rename, play back, and export takes to Files, AirDrop or other apps. APPLE WATCH Open Terrane on your watch and its microphone becomes the input: set it down across the room, or hold your wrist up to a sound, and listen on your iPhone. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Sound is processed on this iPhone. Listening audio is held in memory and cleared when you end the session. Nothing is saved unless you record, and recordings stay on your device until you share or delete them, or copy them to your own iCloud Drive if you turn that on. No account, no tracking, no ads; anonymous usage statistics, which you can turn off in Controls. Headphones required. Terrane is a listening instrument, not a hearing aid or hearing protection, and does not replace Transparency mode.
