Clans & Tartans
Caledonian Roots clan finder
$3.99
Type a surname to find its clans, crest badges, mottoes and tartans. There are clan maps, Scottish prints, original music and films too. Pay once, no adverts or account.
Type a surname and the app shows the clans it's linked to: the clan of that name first, then any clan that lists the name as a sept (a family name associated with the clan). Kennedy, for example, opens Clan Kennedy and also shows Clan Cameron, which counts Kennedy among its septs.
The app covers 541 clans and families and links 2,670 surnames to them. Where the sources have them, a clan page shows:
• the crest badge a clan member may wear, drawn in silver
• the chief
• the motto and what it means
• the plant badge and the district
• a written description of the crest
• a history of two or three paragraphs, for 178 clans
• well-known Scots with the name
• the clan's tartans, drawn as woven cloth from their Register thread counts
• the clan's seats, named and pinned on a map
• for 50 clans, the clan's motto poster from the Caledonian Roots shop
Of the 541, 330 have only their name and tartans, because the sources the app uses record nothing more about them.
There are 2,346 tartans in all, from a January 2017 copy of the Register, so newer tartans aren't included. 891 of them are district, national, military and royal tartans. If a surname isn't linked to a clan, you can look up a tartan for a place instead, such as Nova Scotia.
Save your clans with the star and they're listed when the app opens. Choose a tartan to show in the widget on your Home Screen or Lock Screen, or save it as a wallpaper. A second widget shows a different clan each day.
Two clan maps show where the clans held land: a modern map of Highland clans and Lowland families, and Johnston and Robertson's map of 1899.
There's Caledonian Roots' own work in the app too:
• Listen: 14 original tracks, two of them songs with their words and the rest soundtracks. They play offline and with the screen locked.
• Watch: 11 films from the Caledonian Roots YouTube channel
• Gallery: the Isle of Skye in five seasons, 40 Munros, Scottish lighthouses, oil paintings and moody landscapes, with links to the prints in the shop
You pay once for the app, with no adverts or account. It runs on iPhone and iPad, and everything except the seat maps and the films works offline.
Every clan page lists its sources. Facts and histories come mainly from Wikipedia, and facts for a few clans from ScotClans. Most chiefs come from the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs and the rest from Wikipedia. Tartans are from the Scottish Register of Tartans, and seat coordinates and well-known people from Wikidata. The crest badge drawings and both clan maps are from Wikimedia Commons, with each artist credited.
A surname or sept link isn't a claim of clan membership. The app is independent and isn't affiliated with the Scottish Register of Tartans, the Court of the Lord Lyon or the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs.
