Jacob Olie (1834-1905), a carpenter and school teacher, photographed Amsterdam at the end of the 19th century. He recorded the rise of the modern city, with all its industry, railways, trams and shipping.
His photos are sharp, crisp clear, and made with an eye for composition and perspective. They offer us a comprehensive view of the city in Olie's days. In a few decades Amsterdam had developed rapidly, once again becoming a modern city. Olie recorded the transformation.
