Description

Learn German with 5 minutes of practice daily. Mondly is the quick fix that will teach you core German words and German phrases for conversation, just like a phrasebook.

With Mondly you can learn German sentences and expressions FREE with daily German language lessons online. This app is the effective way for beginners to study verbs, pronunciation and how to speak like a native with daily practice.

The secret path to language learning
Remember the German language classes in school? You started with hundreds of basic words and expressions, continued with tons of German grammar lessons and at the end of a full semester’s language course you could barely translate a sentence or say “Hello!” to a local. Does it sound familiar? That’s the traditional way to learn a language. But it’s not the fastest and not the most efficient way.
Mondly has a different approach, that’s opposite to the average language course.

This is how the future of language courses looks like
The App gets you started with a basic conversation between two people. You quickly start memorizing core words, use them to build sentences and phrases, and at the end of a 45-minutes module you are able to reconstruct that conversation with your own voice. It’s an effective way to learn German phrases.

Here are the key features that make Mondly a great tutor for you:

State-of-the-art Speech Recognition. Mondly knows exactly how to listen to your German words and phrases. You will only get a positive feedback if you speak German clearly and correctly. This will improve your pronunciation.

Useful phrases for real situations. Memorizing hundreds of words is not the way to go when it comes to learning German.

Learn conversational German. Unless you plan on reading science books, conversation is the main reason to take this free course. It will help you build a core German vocabulary with widely-used nouns and verbs and speak German clearly.

Verb conjugations. Conversations are fun, but the foundation of a foreign language is grammar. If you want to learn more during this course, just tap the German verbs and get the full conjugation on the screen, including the translation. It’s faster and better than a dictionary.

The Leaderboard. We made learning easy and fun, so why not throw in some more game elements, such as score? See how your friends are doing and compete with people from all over the world to become the best learner in the Mondly family.

Before you know it, at the end of these German lessons, you will master the most useful 5000 words and phrases and you will be on the fast lane to learning a new language. Kids will love it as well.

Just like the Rosetta Stone!

When I suddenly found myself in Germany as a military wife, I didn’t know where to begin. I was given access to the Rosetta Stone for German and wow—the set up was so significantly different from when I studied French in college. I picked it up quick. And by the end of that year, I was naturally answering English questions in German and my dreams were in German, too. Ten years later and no one to speak German with, Ive lost almost all of it. I wanted to start studying again but can’t afford the Rosetta Stone. I can’t believe this exists as an app let alone for the price offered. I’ve never been more excited to learn another language before!

There are much better apps for German.

If your a beginner this is not where I would start. I did the free trial because some web sites gave it great reviews. Now I believe it’s because Mondly paid for those reviews. Mondly is more like a glorified phrase book and not a good one at that. I’ve been using Duolingo along with Busuu for a year and these two apps compliment each other very well. Duolingo is better at sentence structure and word order and Busuu I’d better for the grammar to understand the above plus pronunciation. Busuu lessons are also corrected by native speakers. The problems I found with Mondly is it’s riddled with errors. The German voice doesn’t always match the text. Some of the translations given are inaccurate. The app expects you to tell the difference between a lowercase L (l ) and a capital I. Guess wrong and it counts against you. I didn’t find that the lesson built on each other but were rather random. There is no grammar given so it’s up to you figure out why articles and verbs change. Good luck with that. Chat bot was interesting. Have a conversation with a bot as long as you use one of the responses given for you to use. Make up your own and the bot doesn’t understand and won’t continue unless you use a response from the list. If your familiar with the language it’s a good review app but be prepared for some unusual translations, but you may get frustrated with all the errors in the app.

Good, but not great

This review is based on the free version, which works well as a supplement to other apps.

Pros:
-Has nice visual interface with a representative picture for each new word
-Makes you practice new words and learn grammar by putting them in a sentence
-It doesn’t feel hard; rather, it feels easy, and yet you are still learning
-Intuitive interface that guides you through learning

Cons:
-It’s occasionally buggy. The word for “pie” is pronounced as a different word (I think the verb for “to cook”) but presumably spelled correctly.
-I don’t like how you have to input an answer, press a button to check it, and then once you’re right you have to press a button again to continue. It’s just too much button-pressing. Since I know I’ve gotten it right, just take me to the next exercise. But if I get it wrong, then you can leave it on the same page and allow me to review my mistake. Having to press “Continue” all the time interferes with the flow.
-At the end, when a summary of new things learned is given, the German words and phrases disappear right away and turn into English words. It would be helpful, instead, to have a list of German vocabulary on one side and the equivalent English vocabulary on the other so you can review it all at once, and to be able to tap to listen to the German words and phrases again as you review.
