My previous memory app was free, but it offered only one activity mode and a built-in review schedule. When it failed to keep up with iOS changes, it dropped from the App Store...and so my quest to find the perfect memory app began.
Most apps for Bible memory rely on passages that are curated on the Internet, but Memorize By Heart allows the user to copy/paste any passage of any length, which is great for memorizing entire chapters, if desired. Although the developers make a number of famous quotes available for download from their library, it's up to the user whether to download or not.
I have been amazed with the level of developer response with this app...when I made a request for a few features, I got an immediate response...and they were implemented in just 3 weeks! It's pretty obvious that the programmers aren't just out to make a buck; they truly care how folks learn and want to make the experience as efficient as possible.
A few features that I really like are the adjustable text size and multiple learning modes. If I get bogged down with one method, switching to another can help to get back into learning mode. Dark mode integration is helpful, too. Highly recommended!
Excellent app that delivers!
This app does an excellent job in helping me memorize large passages of scriptures and speeches. The developer has done a really great job with packing it full of features while still maintaining a small footprint in app size. I love that it has multifaceted exercises that help me memorize the text in different ways. The memory interval notifications are very helpful — these can be turned on or off — and I love the scriptures and speeches that are pre-loaded and ready for download within the app. One of the best features is the Scan which makes it a snap to import text. The developer is responsive and friendly. I’ve had a great ongoing experience with this app, and I give it my highest recommendation.
Developer Response ,
Thank you for the high praise!! It means a lot to us and inspires us to keep building
I agree with James McCarty, Trackerguy, and Maui Kid. This was listed on AppAdvice on April 16th and now it feels like a bait-and-switch by the developer. Within HOURS of being posted on AppAdvice, it was changed to a subscription app. Very shifty.
While I can appreciate charging for premium features like cloud sync and unlimited verses, the free version is all but useless since it only allows you to work on ONE verse. Come on, buddy!
Allowing 10 verses in a free version is hardly an UNLIMITED amount and it would better showcase the app’s utility. I also support James McCarty’s objection to the limitation on each memory game. Again, SHOWCASE THE APP and stop pestering us to upgrade to something we can’t even play with.
Regarding the “Lifetime” subscription, charging $40 puts WAY too much risk on the consumer. At some point the developer will stop supporting it or will run into issues with future iOS versions. What then?! $40/$19 means my ROI > 2.1 years. A lot can happen during that time.
In the end, I would not recommend this app in its current state. I’d wait for the developer to add more verses and revamp his cost model, then give it another look. Offering another promo on AppAdvice and/or restoring full functionality to the current suite of memory games could also help win people back.
Developer Response ,
No bait and switch intended. It was an honest mistake that I pushed the pricing before the updated version. I have been supporting this app for 2 years. I had no idea that changing the price would not go live at the same time as the new version. I didn’t post this app on app advice or anywhere else. Those guys scrape apps that are paid and go free. I am very sorry. I am offering one month free for anybody that was affected by this. Please contact me through the app.
You can easily memorize one verse and then delete it and add another one. I only allow one memorization at a time. I am going to push out another feature “groups” later this year that will allow multiple people to sync up and it’ll give free users more memorizations
I have listened to the pricing complaints and just slashed each price in over half and will take effect on April 22. I will not go any further as there is great value in the product, future features, and my full time attention. This is not just a hobby - as I’ve said, I’ve been supporting this 2 years and plan to do another 10. Yes, tech might change, but not people’s need to memorize. I will change with the tech.
In the end, I am glad people like the functionality of the app, but are only complaining about pricing
