Description
Hold the Moon in your hands. Moon Globe HD turns your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into a precision instrument for viewing Earth's Moon. Satellite imagery and topographic laser altimeter data are combined to render the Moon with realistic lighting in realtime 3D.
Use the multitouch screen to manipulate the view. Spin above the surface, or switch to Telescope mode to see the Moon as it appears from your location on Earth. Adjust the display time and watch the sunlight shift over the lunar landscape. A "tag cloud" floats just above the surface, labeling terrain features and spacecraft; touch any label to find out more about that feature. Moon Globe also shows you where the Moon and Sun are in the sky with its dynamic sky compass.
PLEASE NOTE: Regular Moon Globe is a smaller download and is free. This HD version has slightly, not extremely, better resolution.
What’s New
Version 2.3
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.
• Updated for iOS 7 and iOS 8. iOS 7 or later is required for this update.
• Supports full resolution on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
• The Sky Compass projection is now based on angular elevation. This better indicates how high the Moon and Sun are in the sky.
Ratings and Reviews
Superb Navigation & Outreach Tool
I am an amateur astronomer who observes and conducts public outreach on a regular basis. I have many Moon references, in book form, plastic maps, and iPhone/iPad app formats. They all provide great information. But the one resource that is always with me and used most often outside at the telescope, is this app. It is visually stunning, versatile, readable, loaded with useful information and very easy to use. And it does not turn into paper mâché in heavy dew situations. The ability to clearly recognize and locate lunar features at various scale of magnification is a tremendous aid, whether I'm trying to find something new or in effectively conveying understanding to the general public. Thank you so much for producing and continuing to supporting this outstanding tool!
Absolutely stunning!
I’m a very dedicated amateur astronomy educator, and I spend a lot of time showing people the moon. I’m sad to say that my knowledge of the names of the moon’s craters and highlands is middling at best. This app is a beautiful and easy-to-use tool for reviewing those names, for figuring out what you can see on the moon when, and for generally exploring our closest celestial neighbor. There’s nothing half as good on the app store for learning our moon
Good iOS app for Lunar observers.
I've been using this app for some time for Lunar feature observation/identification. It great to be able to reverse the 'atlas' left to right as seen in my 8" SCT and small refractor. Sure beats trying to look through the back of a paper atlas at the scope.
Recommended.
