Read Japanese laws and your own rules and dictionaries in one careful typesetting. Download laws from e-Gov, import your own as XML, and keep it all on your device.
Read Japanese laws, your own rules and your own dictionaries — all in the same typesetting.
MyCodex works in English and Japanese. The laws it downloads are the laws of Japan, in Japanese, from e-Gov, the Japanese government's law database.
It puts laws, your own rules and your own dictionaries on one bookshelf: company policies, club bylaws, tournament rules, glossaries. Documents that used to live in PDFs and wikis become something you can look up article by article.
■ Find laws and keep them
Search e-Gov by law title or full text, and add laws to your library. Once added, a law can be read without a connection. From its amendment history you can also open past versions and versions not yet in force.
■ Follow references between laws
References in the text are links. Tap a reference to another law to open it at the article, paragraph or item it points to. Tap a reference to an article of the same law to check it without losing your place. Go to any article by typing its number on a keypad made for article numbers, fold the table of contents by part and chapter, and open tables full screen.
■ Your own rules, in the same form as the law
Import rules written in the Japanese Standard Law XML format from the Files app or AirDrop. MyCodex reads their parts, chapters, sections, articles, paragraphs and items, and builds a table of contents. Revised editions of the same rules are kept together.
■ Make your own dictionary
Import glossaries, quotation collections, dialect dictionaries — anything made of headwords and entries — as XML. Headwords narrow down as you type, and references inside an entry take you to other entries or to articles.
■ Create them without writing XML
You can also make rules and dictionaries in MyCodex Editor, a separate web editor that runs in a browser on your computer (https://mycodex-editor.rpaka-farm.jp). Export what you make and import it into the app, without writing XML by hand.
■ Typesetting for reading
Choose Mincho (serif) or Gothic (sans-serif), vertical or horizontal writing, text size and line spacing. While you read, the toolbars fade away and leave only the text; tap to bring them back. Dark Mode is supported.
■ Bookmarks and history
Bookmark articles and headwords, and gather them into collections across documents. To bookmark an article, long-press its number. History takes you back to where you were reading.
■ Your data stays on your device
Imported documents, bookmarks and history are stored on your device and never sent to the developer. There is no analytics. The only network access is to e-Gov, to search for and download laws and the list of laws used for links.
Getting started
On the empty library, "Try a Sample" opens the Constitution of Japan, sample rules and sample dictionaries for reading (their content is in Japanese), so you can see how your own documents will look. Samples are not added to your library.
About the law data
Law data is retrieved from e-Gov Law Search (https://laws.e-gov.go.jp/) and typeset by MyCodex. MyCodex is developed by an individual and is not an official app of the Japanese government or any government agency. The accuracy of the laws shown is not guaranteed; check e-Gov Law Search or the Official Gazette for the authoritative text.
