Neo Studio 4+

The Neo folks are no longer supporting Neo Notes, which was honestly the only app capable of making the pens usable. However they are moving to this new Neo Studio, which is horrible compared to Neo Notes. I’m sure they’re going to ask us to “bear with them” while they improve it, but I don’t have much faith. Studio has been out for a while now, and it still doesn’t perform. Transcribing is not as good, organization of notebooks is terrible, the UI is flashy but not useful, it’s slower, and not nearly as good as the first app.

This is all very sad because the pen technology is great, but it’s lagging behind their poor developer skills. You can’t even bring over all your old notebooks from the other app. Until they fix this stuff, I just can’t recommend this.

While they claim that it will synchronize, in reality it is deeply hit or miss. One of my notebooks has only synchronized entries from sometime around a year ago and older. Another has only synchronized entries made while the app was open a few days ago, but not ones made today, despite having told it to synchronize several times since. Many pages are listed as being written in 2000, although the notebook was started in 2021. I have tried so many different approaches, but they don’t work. The App Support link sends you to a webpage with no support information at all. My notebooks are only marginally useful if the information is splattered across two devices. I never know if my data is complete until i cross reference both my phone and ipad. I have to be incredibly careful to only have my ipad app open when writing, lest new data end up on the phone only, where it is tiny and difficult to read.

I have been using Neo pens for several years (I’m on my third one) and I LOVE it. The brilliant thing about Neo pen was that you could automatically save your notebooks to Evernote (or OneDrive). Having my handwritten research, meeting and personal notes automatically show up, page by page, as notes in Evernote is what made the system so magical. (It had nothing to do with the app itself). If that’s not going to be possible any longer I will have to buy the competitor’s pen, paper, and app. But I don’t want to, and will happily change this review and rating if I’m missing something.
