Description

Over 140k authors are already writing their next masterpiece using Novelist. And it's completely free: no initial cost, zero advertising and no in-app purchases!

Sounds ambitious? Yes, it is. We don't want you to conform to some framework or methodology, but to provide you the best tools to plot, write, organize and schedule your stories.

- Plot - is when you list all the elements of your story, like on a board. Items can be edited, moved, merged, splitted, reordered and deleted. You can even set a status, write notes and texts or add tags, metadata and pictures to each item. Categories are completely customizable, as are metadata and statuses.

- Write - is when you put all the items together to compose scenes. Each scene is a piece of your story and can be annotated or written directly in our app!

- Organize - is when you structure your scenes in acts, parts, chapters and so on. Your imagination is the limit.

- Schedule - is when you set your goals: word count or due date.

Amazing app!

I just got this app, and I only have one small complaint, but I already love it! I’ve tried so many other writing and note taking apps for novels but this is by far the best one! Problems I’ve had with the other apps I’ve had are some are super laggy, don’t save, you need to pay, it’s super un organized, all the things you DONT want if u wanna write, but Novelist is none of these things! It’s not laggy at all, it saves EVERY time, it’s very organized, it’s easy to understand and use, and the best part, it’s completely free! My only complaint is that I don’t like that I can’t make an account. Id love to use this app on my Chromebook too for when I write Wattpad stories, but I don’t wanna write all my notes down on my phone, then have to do it on my Chromebook too. If you guys could make it so we can make accounts to access our notes on different devices, I’d absolutely love it and I bet so many other people would too. But other then that, it’s an amazing app and something about it makes me feel really productive too!

Developer Response ,

Hi, unfortunately there's no sync cloud as it would be too costly to maintain for a free app (I already spend ~1000€/year to keep Novelist up & running and can't afford more). Sorry for the inconvenience.

Nice app

Underated. It is very good. The ui is visually pleasing, the gestures are intuitive, and the fact that it’s free is unbelievable.

The ability to tag things, as well as relationships was very useful. As was the ability to pick colors and a picture thumbnail, making things stand out more. I also like how you can’t just accidentally delete things by swiping and have to actually click inside the three dots to delete them.

If you have google drive, you can push the books to and pull them from google drive so that changes are cloud synced.

Alternatively, you can actually make this sync everywhere. First of all, get the one drive or drop box or whatever cloud app you want. Next, go to files and keep going back until you reach browse. It should show a bunch of things like on my drive, icloud, recently deleted. If one drive/dropbox/whatever else is not visible, tap the three dots on the top right, hit edit, and then enable it so that it is. Now, whenever you are inside your book in the novelist app, hit the three dots, hit backup, and then in files navigate to where your cloud is and to the folder in your cloud that you want it. It should save the backup as a .nov folder on the cloud.

Novelist has a progressive web app, meaning you can access it on any device that supports it online. So on another device, you can hit the 3 dots and hit restore backup, and then upload your cloud backup of your edited book.

App Requests

I love the app. It is probably one of the best out there. But I do have a wish list. :-)

1. Templates need to be saved as a book so that they can be pushed/pulled as well as edited!!!

2. If #1 above is achieved the templates should have a different look so they are not confused with your actual books or hidden until you need to edit/push/pull them.

3. The (Write tab) and the (Outline tab) are accentually the same thing. It would be helpful if the (Write tab) had settings that could turn off elements so you only see the ones you want. Which would give you a more distraction free space.

4. It would be great if the Compile settings or any settings for that matter could also be saved as part of the template. It’s a pain to have to keep going in and resetting them for each book and each device.

5. It would be nice if the (Status circle) was actually a (Tag) because if you happen to have a lot of status it might become hard to remember what each color is for.

6. It would really be cool if each block had a check box to grey it out. Selected by default. That way at a glance you would know what was being worked on or hasn’t been touched.

Just some thoughts do or don’t but it would really be helpful.
