Boosting Productivity: A review of Opal: Screen Time for Focus
jsjeejhdhdhj
Opal: Screen Time for Focus has become an indispensable tool in my quest for productivity and mindful technology usage. From the moment I started using it, I noticed a significant improvement in my ability to stay focused and on task. The app's interface is clean, intuitive, and easy to navigate, making it simple to set up and customize according to my preferences. Setting daily screen time limits and scheduling focused time intervals has helped me regain control over my digital habits. I appreciate the flexibility to adjust settings based on my changing needs and commitments. One standout feature of Opal is its ability to block distracting apps during designated focus sessions. This has been a game-changer for me, as it prevents me from mindlessly scrolling through social media or getting lost in email when I should be concentrating on important tasks. Furthermore, the app provides insightful usage statistics, allowing me to track my progress over time and identify areas for improvement. The visual representation of my screen time habits serves as a powerful motivator to stay disciplined and make positive changes. Overall, Opal: Screen Time for Focus has exceeded my expectations and become an essential tool in my daily routine. Whether you're a student, professional, or anyone looking to reclaim control over their digital life, I highly recommend giving this app a try.
I wish I could use this app on Windows! 🤩😩

I spent a lot of time sinking into pornography, wanting to focus on studying, but every time I felt stressed, my mind craved dopamine. Coming from completely quitting addictions, my mind found pornography as its escape corner (a terrible one). I tried many apps, and none allowed me true focus like Opal did. (My mind hates it, and my soul thanks it.) In this digital era, where the junk information we feed our minds has created negative mental circuits, Opal is a solid app that, with its DEEP FOCUS mode, truly blocks ALL dumb scrolling (by setting a limit on how much time I can use social media in my case) or blocking unwanted content (in this case, adult content in the browser). Even uninstalling the app doesn’t remove the block—it’s brutal. That said, DEEP FOCUS mode is only available for premium users, but honestly, I didn’t think twice about paying; it’s WORTH IT.Now I have it on both my phones, and I wish I could put it on my PC (Windows) because, besides loving how it looks, it’s undoubtedly the tool that helps me the most in my journey to a better version of myself. Of course, this is alongside exercise and education, but without a doubt, Opal is a tool that helps you grow and use your phone as a tool that connects you to your best self, not one that pulls you away from it.Thank you so much, and I truly hope to see the app available for Windows soon.

I’ve used this app for two months now and it works great if you want to add an extra barrier to your social media consumption but for me personally it has not worked how I hoped. I don’t like that it notifies me 5 mins before my app limits is about to hit because I just go in and change the time from 1 hour to 2 hours and so on. I also struggle a lot with breaking the habit of mindless scrolling when I have some free time and I get sucked it and that’s when I start to change the opal settings. I would like if they could have the option to turn off the notifications when they tell your snooze session is going to end or when the app limit will hit. I would also like to choose a level weekly or daily. Maybe have like a limited snooze time for example in a day you can only snooze for 20 mins total etc. or you can only change the settings 1-2 times per week. Make it a little harder for those who struggle the most. Also, I would like to get a notification or something while I am in certain apps. For example after 3 mins of being on the app you can send a notification for me to be aware that I’ve spent too much time or that im wasting my time. Or something that can help stop the mindless scrolling even when it’s during the permitted period. Not so much avoid it (like blocking the app) but to minimize it
4.4 brings back one of the most requested features from the old Opal, straight off our what's-next list: Sessions, including Always On. Here's everything in this update, what came before it, and what we're doing next, in priority order.
New in 4.4
• Sessions are back as a Rule. Start one for a chosen duration, or choose Always On to keep blocking until you decide to stop
• Before you delete a Rule, Opal now offers to pause it instead. Deleting is forever, pausing isn't
• The Adult Websites filter now has a Hard Mode commitment, so it can't be casually switched off
• Better UX on all of our Rule Creation flows
Also fixed in recent updates
Rules and blocking
• Block whole categories during onboarding, with a nudge that picking apps one by one is safest (4.3.2)
• Better detection of blocking silently drifting out of line (4.3.2)
• Time limits work better: resets are back and usage counts again after you reach your limit (4.3.1)
• Opal quietly repairs blocking in more situations (4.3.1)
• Fixed PIN number migration + locked down disabling rules when it's active (4.3)
• Added the ability to reload blocks from your Settings or blocks tab to refresh rules (4.3)
Home screen and design
• Your daily screen time is back on the home screen, with today's total and most-used apps (4.3.1)
• The gem progress notification no longer appears for gemstones you've already unlocked (4.3.2)
• Refreshed timer and unblock Live Activities, and fixed the widget gemstone color (4.3.1)
Account and Pro
• More stability syncing your Pro access (4.3.2)
• No more paywall for current Pro subscribers (4.3)
• Fixed the unexpected logouts (server fix June 24, plus 4.2.2)
• Pro access restores itself automatically, and everyone has unlimited Rules (4.2.2)
Unblocking
• Waiting rooms can no longer be parked to bypass the wait (4.3.2)
• One simple unblock flow everywhere, with your own unblock time, not just 5 minutes (4.2.2)
• Fixed cases where unblocking didn't work at all (4.2.1)
Streaks
• Fixed an issue that could cause your streak to be incorrectly calculated (4.3.1)
• Fixed the migration that wiped some streaks, and restored streaks for 3,500 affected people on June 25 (4.2.1)
Stability
• Cleaner screen time stats (4.3)
• Fixed crashing on launch, overheating and lag on the home screen (4.2, 4.2.1)
• Uninstall protection can no longer be turned off while blocking (4.2.1)
Things you should know
• Increasing wait time in the waiting room is in Settings => Waiting Room => Hard
• Your daily screen time is now on the home screen; tap the Screen Time card for the app-by-app view
What's next, in priority order
• Getting everyone signed back into the right account and out of duplicate accounts
• Continuing to harden against apps getting stuck blocked
• Fixing referrals
• Further hardening streak resilience (a big step shipped in this release)
• Bringing back "Leave early"
• Showing Focus Hours on the home screen
• Clearer onboarding so it's obvious what Opal does, what a Rule is, and how unblocking works
Everything here started as a message from one of you, and the next update will too. Keep them coming. Thank you.
