Turn small important files into encrypted printable A4 paper backups, then restore them later by scanning the printed QR pages. Paper Disk is a local-first file backup and recovery tool from RetroNotes. It converts a small file into an encrypted printable A4 PDF made of QR codes, so the file can be preserved on physical paper and restored when needed. No account, cloud service, subscription, advertising, analytics, or tracking is required. CREATE PAPER DISK Choose a file up to 128KB and create a printable Paper Disk. Paper Disk encrypts the file content through Apple CryptoKit using AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption before writing the encrypted data into QR codes. Export the generated A4 PDF, then print and store the pages wherever you choose. RESTORE PAPER DISK Use the device camera to scan any compatible Paper Disk. Each page contains 9 QR codes. A page is confirmed after all 9 QR codes on that page are scanned. When all required pages are complete, Paper Disk reconstructs the encrypted archive, verifies it, decrypts the content, and restores the original file. Paper Disk can restore compatible archives larger than the standalone app’s 128KB creation limit, including complete 1.44MB Paper Disks created by RetroNotes. PAPER RECOVERY Paper Disk is designed for small important files that may be useful to preserve outside ordinary digital storage. Examples include Markdown files, TXT files, recovery notes, configuration files, small PDFs, and other essential personal documents. A complete Paper Disk is required for recovery. The encryption key is reconstructed from information distributed across the Paper Disk pages. Paper Disk does not use a password. Anyone who obtains all required pages may be able to restore the file, so printed Paper Disk pages should be stored appropriately. ENCRYPTED FILE CONTENT File content is encrypted before it is encoded into QR codes. The file name, Paper Disk ID, page number, and page information may remain visible on the printed archive, but the original file content is not stored as plain text in the QR codes. LOCAL-FIRST File creation and recovery are performed on your device. Paper Disk does not provide an account-based cloud service and does not include ads, analytics, tracking services, subscriptions, or in-app purchases. Camera permission is required when scanning and restoring a Paper Disk. COMPATIBILITY Paper Disk uses the compatible Paper Disk PD1 format. The standalone Paper Disk app can create archives up to 128KB and can restore compatible Paper Disk archives up to the complete 1.44MB format. Compatible Paper Disks previously created by RetroNotes can also be restored. If you need to create a complete 1.44MB Paper Disk, use RetroNotes.
