Ratings and Reviews
Best OpenVPN app on iOS, bar none.
Blows away the so called “official” OpenVPN Connect app. My provider was having some issues with their WireGuard servers some time ago, so I decided to use the OpenVPN servers as a fallback option until they resolved the issue. I knew from prior experience that the OpenVPN Connect app for iOS was an ugly and unreliable piece of 💩, so I did some searching and found Passepartout, and my mind has been blown. If everyone put the same care into their apps, the App Store would be a much better place. Heck, I think this dev could even create an app to cure racism if we gave him the funding.
Speaking of funding, I did check out the Kickstarter page, and sadly, I can’t be a backer at this point in time. As someone who doesn’t use MacOS, the development roadmap doesn’t quite align with my needs. If the dev put WireGuard development ahead of MacOS and IPSec (which already has native support on iOS), I would be backing on sight. As it stands, with WireGuard support being a ‘stretch’ goal, I can’t pledge more than the bare minimum. I have, however, reached out to my VPN provider (who have a decent history of backing open source projects) and shared the link to the Kickstarter page with them.
Cheers.
Developer Response ,
I'm flattered to say the least hah. Come on, it's just an app!
As to the campaign, I quickly evaluated your suggestion and I agree. Also, I believe that your feeling is shared. That's why I suggest you visit the campaign now, as I updated the main target to include WireGuard rather than IKEv2.
Thanks for your kind comment and let me know what you think.
Cheers,
Davide
Almost there
Very good app that allows the connection to latch even if the device is sleeping. Only issue is that VPN throughput is a lot slower than with OpenVPN Connect. I hope the developer fixes this soon.
MY RESPONSE BELOW —>
Response to Developer’s Response: It is slower on both private server and popular providers. I noticed that with Open PN connect, a tun interface is created with a standard MTU of 1500. With Passepartout, it always weirdly picks 1250 and doesn’t even pass any tun-mtu or related values back to the server. Since Passepartout completely ignores tun-mtu and it’s related settings, there is no way to fix the bad throughput on the client end. Fixing it on server end is not an option for a lot of us since it will mess up lots of other clients or we may not be in control of the OpenVPN server. Please can you add the capability to manually change MTU or please pass the mtu values to the server and use standard MTU of 1500? Thanks.
Developer Response ,
Hi, could you provide a measure? Is it a private server or a provider? Thanks, Davide
Go From Secure - to - Bulletproof
Yes. It’s that good. Some many of the best VPNs all utilize an open VPN model, it’s simply more secure. iOS/Apple has always been a system where a complex application/program that require a lot of time to setup and access openVPN servers. If you have an application like VyprVPN, or ProtonVPN, bring your iOS application to its full potential make the chameleon protocol actually work the way it’s supposed to. Take the secure core technology of ProtonVPN to another level. Simple to get started, with all the right features, and none if the weight/fluff.
I imagine I’ll be using this on any iOS device I have, for a really long time. Sometimes I have some connections issues, and wonder if the app utilizes the killswitch features of say VyprVPN. It seems that the worst thing could be a 10 second window w/ a tunnel up.
Still love this app! Great job
