Patterning, the award-winning circular drum machine, is back with version 3. Building on the deep feature set and intuitive interface that has made Patterning a favorite among musicians over the last decade, Patterning 3 introduces new features to spark creativity and rhythmic exploration.

And with the latest update to version 3.1, Patterning now also runs on macOS, bringing circular beats to the desktop for the first time.

When Patterning launched in 2015, it introduced a fresh take on the drum machine with its intuitive circular interface and a new approach to generating rhythms. Designed to inspire creativity, Patterning became a beat-making hub for musical explorers, creative comrades, and novices alike. With 700+ free user-created and artist drum kits, the Patterning community is strong and growing.

In Patterning 3, Olympia Noise Co. continues to innovate with exciting new features such as parametric swing, fill patterns, parameter modulation, an FX track, multiple timelines, and more. Patterning 3 also adds support for AUv3, allowing it to run as a plugin inside a host application.

Here’s some of what’s new in Patterning 3:

▶ AUv3

Patterning 3 now operates as an AUv3 plugin, integrating into AUv3 hosts like Ableton Live, Logic, AUM, and more. Multi-channel output and MIDI are available in supported hosts.

▶ macOS

Run Patterning 3 as a standalone app or AUv3 plugin on Apple Silicon.

▶ Parametric Swing

Parametric Swing is a novel approach to musical swing that allows for the creation of beats with a unique feel—from slightly off-kilter to wildly erratic, drunken grooves.

▶ Fill Patterns

Quickly switch to a "fill" version of your patterns, perfect for adding dramatic flair or transitioning between song sections.

▶ Modulation

Apply LFOs, randomization, and velocity to most parameters, crafting beats that pulse, evolve, and react in complex ways. Simply hold the ALT button to assign modulation to your tracks.

▶ FX Track

Dive deeper into sound design with the new FX Track. This dedicated track allows for the automation and modulation of FX parameters, enabling detailed sound sculpting. Manipulate effects over time to add movement, texture, and depth to your beats.

▶ Multiple Timelines

Create full songs, loop sections, and more with the updated timeline editor.

▶ New Effects

Patterning 3 includes new effects: track saturation and ring modulation, a master compressor, and expanded delay and EQ controls.

▶ Audio, MIDI, and Ableton Live Set Export

Export perfect multichannel and stereo loops, MIDI files, and even complete Ableton Live Sets. Drag and drop MIDI from Patterning directly into your DAW.

▶ Quantize and Nudge
Record in beats and keep your groove with the nudge layer, or adjust quantization to bring them closer to the grid.

▶ Fast Automation Layers

Touch a parameter to view and edit its automation layer on the circle.

Patterning 3 builds on the huge feature set from previous versions, including:

▶ Unique, circular interface for quick and inspiring beat-making.
Per-track step lengths up to 512 steps in length, playback modes, swing, and more.

▶ Record Beats

Use the drum pads to record beats.

▶ Deep Sampler Engine

Sculpt your sound with controls for pitch, envelope, filter, effect sends, panning, distortion, and ring modulation.

▶ Automation and Modulation
Sequence envelopes, filters, effect sends, MIDI, and more.

▶ Huge Library of Free Drum Kits

Choose from 700+ user-created and artist drum kits.

▶ MIDI Integration

Extensive support for MIDI input and output.

▶ Synchronize

Ableton Link, MIDI Clock, and AU host sync.

…and more.

DParlin ,

Patterning 3 is amazing!

[update] Thank you! That’s amazing and it only took a couple of days??? I wish that I could give this app 10 stars!

My favorite drum sequencer (Patterning 2) has opened up a new world of possibilities with AUv3 support in version 3. I love all of the other new features as well, but being able to run as an AUv3 has made Patterning an indispensable part of my workflow now.

One feature that would make this workflow far more flexible would be adding a feature to allow MIDI notes to trigger specific patterns. Song mode is fun, but doesn’t work well when improvising in a live set. I have mapped MIDI triggers for prev/next pattern but, again, this is pretty limiting when playing through a live set since you can only step through the patterns forward or back by one at a time rather than jumping to any specific pattern than I want. One limited “workaround” is mapping a trigger to the new Fill feature, but again, you are still limited to just one additional pattern option. Adding the ability to assign specific MIDI keys to each pattern in the list would be incredible. One potentially easier way to add this feature would be to just add one key mapping to “trigger a pattern” and then auto-map subsequent patterns to all subsequent keys. Thanks for making such an amazing tool!

Developer Response ,

Thanks! You can now (as of 3.0.8) map midi to trigger specific patterns. In the MIDI Input menu create a new mapping using the plus button. Then choose “Pattern Select” to select the pattern to trigger using MIDI.

Keeps getting better

It is very difficult to improve upon something that is already virtually perfect, but the author managed to achieve it, again! I felt the same way when Patterning version 2 came out and feel the same way now with version 3.

It truly is a very significant upgrade, not just a face lift like with many other apps.

I have to admit that it took me a moment to feel at home with the new layout of features and the new features themselves. For example, the pads/record page is quite different in that it now shows the track parameters on one side and the list of tracks on the other. What I find myself doing sometimes is hitting a given pad and then not realizing that the right side parameters don’t change upon it and only upon selection of the track on the left side (which makes sense as the parameters following the pad with every hit might be distracting when performing). Still, maybe there’s some UI solution to it.

Initially I also thought that I liked the layout of randomization settings (and some other settings in general such as page) better in Patterning 2, but addition of ALT key makes sense as now there are more things squeezed into the app.

The implementation of un-quantized recording and the nudge layer are exemplary. Simply fantastic!

THE DATA OPERATOR ,

excellent, but..

Of course, there’s sometimes a but right? Excellent device, 5 stars for sure. Especially, because it has the cloud drum kits which are all amazing. The implementation of being able to quickly load different or same patterns with different kits is exceptional. The but... the only thing I would ask is that they add randomization features. Patterning has been out for a fairly long time now since version 1, still today though with no randomization features. Please? ty so much for this device. It really is awesome and well worth more than its current price. ty
