Penmark is two things on one iPad, behind one home screen: a book about how writing is built, and a notebook to write in with the Apple Pencil. Neither needs the other. Plenty of people will only ever open the notebook.
LEARN is the book. Thirty-one chapters on four shelves, and a drawn figure for every idea. Three chapters to start, then the nine kinds of essay, then the craft underneath all of them, then the placement essay for anyone sitting one. Every one of the nine kinds opens with its structure drawn out paragraph by paragraph: what each paragraph is for, the moves inside it, and the one mistake that breaks the shape.
The nine kinds are the ones an assignment will actually name: argumentative, compare & contrast, cause & effect, definition, descriptive, illustration, narrative, process, and classification & division.
WRITE is the notebook. Folders, plain or ruled or grid paper, the system pencil tools, a keyboard when you want one, and as many pages as you need. It does two things with what you have written: share it, or save a copy as a PDF.
- One document is one continuous canvas over US Letter sheets
- Pencil and keyboard on the same page: type a paragraph, then write over it, cross a word out, circle it, draw an arrow to the margin
- A black page by default, or a white one, chosen per document. The PDF is always white, because that is the version somebody else reads or prints
- Pinch to zoom, fit the window or actual size
- Folders are optional and one level deep. Deleting a folder never deletes writing
- Autosave. There is no save button and no draft is ever lost
Nothing here is graded, timed, or scored. There is no prompt, no word count, no verdict and no streak anywhere in this app. Lessons are read, not answered: the worked examples arrive with every option already marked and every reason already given.
Nothing leaves your iPad. No accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising, and no servers of ours. iCloud sync is optional, off until you turn it on, and it mirrors your writing into your own private iCloud database and nowhere else.
Penmark is free, and all of it is free. Nothing is locked and no feature sits behind anything. Settings has an optional tip jar that unlocks nothing at all.
You do not need an iPad to read the book. The whole thing is published free and in full at penmark.greatdanecode.com/learn.
For iPad, iPadOS 17 or later. An Apple Pencil is the natural way to write, and a finger switch in the toolbar covers an iPad without one.
