I don’t write a ton of reviews, but needed to take the time to write one for Phocus. It just keeps getting better and better. Major props to the developers, your hard work shows. The new features including noise reduction are amazing. This app works so much better than other legacy camera manufacturers apps (looking at you Canon - you should be ashamed). It’s so quick to connect and effortless to browse through 100MP files. They transfer incredibly quickly too. This app is an amazing value add to an already exceptional product.
Good start with a critical workflow flaw

The app offers core editing features and the X2DII produces incredible files — but there’s a frustratingly critical limitation. There’s no way to export RAW files with adjustments for use on macOS. Exporting RAW only saves the untouched original, which I unfortunately discovered after editing 200+ images. At ~200MB per file, this quickly becomes unsustainable on an iPhone (even with 1TB).If editing is supported, there should be a way to carry those edits forward. Support for exporting in Hasselblad’s FFF format (readable by the Mac app) would solve this. The only current option is exporting as TIFF, but that severely restricts flexibility for future editing.To make matters worse, there’s no cloud sync between the iOS and macOS apps, leaving the two ecosystems completely severed.Update: The TIFF situation is actually even worse as it’s 8bit file in Adobe RGB space, which completely defeats the purpose of using Hasselblad’s incredible color science (HNCS). Please fix this glaring issue, especially if the mobile app is going to get all the latest dev updates first.Dec 2025 Update: Adding a star now that the app supports exporting the 3FR+Phos sidecar file to be edited on macOS.
No shutter delay- unacceptable!

This app critically lacks a delayed shutter release option in conjunction with the self-timer — a function that has been an industry-standard feature on virtually every serious digital and film camera for over two decades. This omission is a significant oversight that directly impacts usability for tripod-mounted, long exposure, and precision framing workflows.There is no technical justification for excluding this feature. Furthermore, since the X2D does not support a mechanical cable release or remote trigger via the USB-C or accessory ports, there is no alternative method to trigger the shutter without physically contacting the camera — introducing vibration and undermining the camera’s performance potential in controlled shooting scenarios.This is a clear regression in functionality. The omission of basic delayed-release capabilities in a flagship medium format system is unacceptable and must be addressed via firmware and app updates immediately

I’ve owned many of the premium camera brands (Leica,Fuji, Nikon, Sony) and until Hasselblad I thought WiFi connectivity that actually worked like a wired connection was a pipe dream. Not with the Phocus app. It is so blazing daft and easy to use I almost always download my photos (200MB at times) directly from camera to phone. I have no idea how they do it. It’s almost worth buying a Hassy for the app. I’m joking of course as the camera is far too expensive for this purpose alone. Still, the experience is phenomenal.
