PiaTune is a professional-grade piano tuning app designed for professional piano tuners.
It tunes the piano like an aural tuner would tune. It measures the partials as you tune and sets the temperament. Then expands this temperament while continuously measuring. You can save the tuning data and reuse. With a saved complete tuning file the piano can be tuned in any order.

Free version is fully functional (except for 2 minute pauses every 12 note changes) up to initial 200 note changes, after which, note range is limited from C3 to C5, and some features (*) are disabled. You can remove these limitations by upgrading to paid version through In App Purchase.

Aural like tuning procedure:
PiaTune uses an F3 - A4 temperament. Just like an aural tuner would do, first four contiguous M3rds are established between F3 and A4. Then the width of the fourths are optimized to get an even progression on major thirds, fourths and major sixths. Result is a perfect equal temperament.
Temperament notes can be measured and tuned simultaneously following a predefined sequence. Alternatively notes A4 to F3 can be pre-measured chromatically first and fine tuned later in any order. The bass and treble is expanded from this temperament just like an aural tuner would do.

Save Your Tunings*:
The first time you tune a piano the above described procedure is used. When you finish the tuning (or during the tuning) you can save the data. If Auto Save File is set ON in the settings, the current file is automatically saved every 5 minutes during the tuning.
The next time you tune the same piano, it is as easy to load the previously saved file and tune the piano. This time, since all the targets are already calculated, you can tune the piano in any order you want.

Over pull*:
When activated, the note frequency is briefly measured and an over pull value is calculated based on the over pull percentages set and the note being tuned. There are three over pull percentages that can be set, bass, midrange and treble.

Choose your stretch*:
For the temperament octave and midrange a 4:2, a compromise between a 4:2 and 6:3 or 4:2 and 2:1 octave can be selected. For the bass, 6:3, 8:4, 10:5, 12:6 and 8:2 octave sizes are available. For the treble a 4:1 or 3:1 size might be suitable for most pianos. But if single octaves are preferred for the last octave you can choose 2:1. 4:2 octaves provide wider stretch.
There is also a special stretch for small pianos like spinets which will tune the bass section all 6:3 octaves.

Custom Offsets*:
Offsets for A0, A1, A2, A3, A5, A6 and A7 can be entered directly or set by measuring these notes. PiaTune will generate a custom tuning curve according to these values instead of using Bass/Mid/Treble octave stretches.

Measure Beats*:
Actual beat rates of major third, sixth and tenth intervals related to the temperament can be measured. The beats rates of fourths, fifths and 4:2 octaves within the temperament can also be calculated using measured beat rates.

Set A4 to a non-standard frequency*:
You can set A4 frequency to a value other than the standard pitch of 440 Hz. The frequency can be set between 392.00 Hz and 466.99 Hz with 0.01 Hz steps.

What’s New

Version 4.8

With this update, two major new features are introduced.

New Tuning Mode is added to Settings. Set it to Temperament Seq. or Pre-Measurement to determine how to start new tunings. Now instead of following the predefined temperament sequence, it is also possible to measure notes from A4 down to F3 chromatically first and then fine tune them in any order.

New tunings can be started as blank or generic inharmonicity data can be loaded, so that "out of the box" you could do some tuning without making any measurements, or do a pitch raise and then take readings after it is closer to pitch.

Update: Keeps crashing

Update: the new version seems to be running smoothly. Thank you!

Original: When it works, it’s a great tool. Unfortunately my app keeps crashing and is no longer usable.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for the feedback.
Please update your app to Version 3.0 to solve the crash issue.

Worth it for me

I’m not a professional piano tuner, but this app along with my limited piano tech knowledge from college is enough for me to tune my piano. It’s not perfect, but it’s close enough to not be annoying.

I just did my second full tuning with this app, and I was delighted to see that my tuning profile from last year was still in the app. Saved a ton of time and effort.

Developer Response ,

Thank you Kitreh.
Normally, PiaTune produces excellent results.
Could you please recheck your inharmonicity measurements and stretch settings.
