Reckoner
Lists, todo, tracker
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
A list app for people whose lists don't stay simple. Nest them as deep as you like, tag anything, total a column, and keep it all in sync over your own iCloud.
I wanted a simple list app. Everything on the App Store was too
complicated, so I built my own, and then spent a year making it
complicated in exactly the ways I wanted. That's Reckoner.
The one idea underneath it: every list can hold items, other lists, or
both, nested as deep as you like. A packing list inside a trip inside
Travel. Fiction inside Books. It's the same screen all the way down, so
there's nothing new to learn at the second level, or the fifth.
WHAT AN ITEM CAN CARRY
An item only needs a title. Everything else is optional and only shows up
once you use it:
• A description, for the longer note
• A date, read back as "today", "in 3 days", "5 days ago"
• A number — price, page count, distance, reps, whatever the list is about
• A short line of subtext under the title: an author, a brand, a time
• A rating out of five
• Tags, for filtering
• Sub-items, for the parts of a thing — swipe right on a row to tuck it
under the one above
LISTS THAT KNOW WHAT THEY'RE FOR
Each list has a few switches you set once and forget:
• Task list — dates become deadlines. Every dated row is tinted by how soon
it's due, and everything you've flagged this way gathers in one All Tasks
view.
• Sum list — totals the Number field of everything not yet done, including
every sub-list underneath, and keeps totalling live as you filter. Show
it as currency if it's money.
• Checkboxes off — for a reference list, where "done" doesn't mean
anything.
• Folder — for a container of unrelated things, so their tags stay out of
each other's way.
FINDING IT AGAIN
• Search every list at once, or just the one you're standing in. Results
show the whole path, sub-items included: in BOOKS > FICTION > Piranesi.
• Tag chips cycle three ways — off, only this, hide this — and match on All
or Any.
• Sort each section how you like, or drag rows exactly where you want them.
• Select several items and move, tag, complete, reorder or delete them in
one go.
NOTHING GETS LOST
• Swipe to delete and an Undo banner catches it before it's real.
• Archive instead and it stays exactly where it is, just hidden, until you
ask for View Archive.
• Export the whole tree to a JSON file, or one list on its own. Import
hands you a checklist of what's in the file, and asks what to do about
anything that's already there — skip it, keep both, or replace.
• Share as Text turns a list into a Markdown outline that reads properly
wherever you paste it, sub-items and all.
SYNC, PRIVATELY
Your lists follow you across your own devices through your own iCloud
account. No setup, no button to press. There's no Reckoner account, no
server, and no analytics — the developer can't read your lists because
there's nowhere for them to be read from.
Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
The first update in a while, and a large one.
SUB-ITEMS
Items can now hold items. Swipe right on a row and tap Indent to tuck it
under the one above; swipe left and Outdent brings it back out. Ticking a
parent ticks everything under it. Collapse a parent and it stays collapsed
when you come back.
TOTALS
Mark a list as a Sum list and it totals the Number field of everything not
yet done, including every sub-list underneath. The total replaces the count
on the list's own row and shows again at the bottom, and it re-totals as
you filter. Format it as currency if it's money.
BETTER TAG FILTERING
Tag chips now match on All or Any, and tapping a chip a second time
excludes that tag instead of including it. The tag cloud narrows to what's
still reachable as you filter, so you're never offered a combination with
nothing behind it. Sub-items inherit their parent's tags.
SEARCH THAT TELLS YOU WHERE YOU ARE
Search from inside a list to look through just that list and everything
under it. Results show the whole path, continuing down through parent
items: in BOOKS > FICTION > Piranesi. List names are in capitals, item
names exactly as you typed them.
IMPORT THAT ASKS FIRST
Import now compares the file against what you already have, field by
field. Anything that clashes, you decide: skip it, keep both copies, or
replace what's there. If you're re-importing a list you sent to someone
else, whatever they deleted before sending it back is called out rather
than quietly staying gone. Exported filenames carry the date.
SHARE AS TEXT, PROPERLY
Share as Text is now Markdown: sub-items nested under their parents,
descriptions included, archived items left out. It reads fine as plain
text and becomes a real nested checklist anywhere that understands
Markdown.
REORDERING
Reorder (in a list's ••• menu) replaces Edit, and only appears on a
manually sorted list, where it means something. In Select mode, Position
sends the items you've picked to the top or bottom — they don't have to be
next to each other.
MOVING THINGS
Every list above the one you're moving out of is marked "Contains current",
so you can see the way down. Select All then Move no longer separates
sub-items from their parents.
SMALLER THINGS
• The Description field opens into a full-screen editor when you want the
room, and stays a tidy few lines when you don't.
• Sort by Rating, highest first.
• Item counts show what's left, not the raw total.
• A Track button logs how long it's been since a date was last set.
• The Help screen names the exact build you're running.
• iCloud sync now updates in the background, without waiting for you to
open the app.
