Speed, spin, and distance for every throw. Auto-captured the moment you release. Works with any disc. Replaces $300+ radar guns.
Measure your disc golf throws with your phone.
RipReader turns your phone's high-speed camera into a throw analyzer. Set your phone on the ground, throw your disc, and get instant metrics. No extra hardware required.
Tap Start and place your phone on the ground or on a spare disc. Throw your disc and motion detection captures it automatically. Review slow-motion footage with your metrics overlaid. No button timing. No second person needed. Just throw.
RipReader measures velocity and spin for every throw, plus GPS distance from your throw to the landing spot. Forehand and backhand are detected automatically. Every throw is saved with slow-motion playback, organized into sessions by date and location. An analytics dashboard tracks your averages, trends, and personal records over time. You can also build your disc bag, and after each session RipReader automatically matches throws to the right disc using on-device visual recognition and compares performance across different discs.
Dedicated throw measurement hardware can run $300 to $400. RipReader works with every disc you own, runs on the phone already in your pocket, and costs a fraction of the price.
RipReader is designed for players who practice with purpose. Auto-detection means you stay in your rhythm, no fumbling with buttons between throws. Capture an entire field session, then review everything after.

Saw the review on BlitzDG and was excited. Downloaded it and all it does is tell me to put my phone face down on the ground…. And I wait…and wait…. and nothing happens. Maybe it’s an app to get me to stretch my back by leaning over?**update** did the recommended fix that was on discord and it worked. I also tracked with my tech disc and Rip Reader has pretty close to the same numbers for speed. This app does have a feature for distance but those numbers did not match my Tech Disc numbers. I used up my 5 free throws. I don’t want to pay for something else since the TD cost enough. Thanks for the cool app. I can see how it can be helpful doing field work.
Developer Response
Update: version 1.4.0 is now available with this bug fixed. If you get a chance to try it, I'd really appreciate it. If it's working for you now, I'd be grateful if you'd consider updating your review.---Hi Sonquizzon,This is most likely a bug with permissions that I am fixing in the next release. For now if you check both of these settings, it should fix your issue.(Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > RipReader > Allow location access while using the app)and(Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services (scroll all the way to the bottom) > Compass Calibration, check that it's set to ON.)Sorry about the inconvenience! Feel free to reach out to me at support@sarulian.com if you run into any more issues!
Fantastic for field practice

I’m a 6-month novice and have found that my recent work with RipReader has helped me to monitor my work at improving my throws. Measuring speed & distance - especially incremental speed & distance - is very useful as I practice my form and try new techniques. I get meaningful feedback on this work and it feels great when you break distance and speed records. There were a few times when practicing where I thought about skipping RipReader but working without it felt like I was missing important information so I’ve always ended up using it. It’s quite easy to use and I feel like the accuracy is also very good. I really love the disc library and lookup feature. Highly recommended!
Great Tool

This is an amazing tool to help analyze your throw without the large price tag of a tech disc! Additionally, once you get a good amount of throws logged you can get some good insights as to how you throw your individual discs. For instance, I had some disc choice biases for my distance drivers but after looking at my throws I realized I had a clear bomber disc that I was not utilizing as much as I should be!!
Great tool

Really easy app to use, and great immediate feedback from the developer to fix a couple of issues with settings. Only thing I could ask for is for the free trial to give a few more than 5 throws. It would be nice to get the hang of the system a bit more before committing to buying.
- Sharper speed readings, with a video-timestamp quantization bug fixed and the speed calibration refined.
- Steadier spin numbers. Cumulative RPM now ignores borderline frames that previously inflated readings, so spin is more consistent throw to throw.
- More reliable disc detection in trickier lighting and busier backgrounds, using a new Apple Vision based fallback when the standard detector is unsure.
- Heads-up alerts when thermal throttling or Low Power Mode start to affect capture, both out loud during the session and again in a summary afterward.
