I built smallTalk while recovering from throat cancer. After rehabilitation surgery there were weeks when I simply could not speak, and the hardest part was not being able to talk to my children. So I made a small, simple app that could speak for me. This is that app, shared in the hope it helps someone else.
smallTalk is a straightforward communication aid. You keep a board of the phrases you use most, and tap one to have your device say it out loud, instantly and clearly. When you need to say something new, type it and smallTalk speaks it for you.
It is designed to be fast and calm to use in a real moment, not a medical tool to configure. Everything is a single tap away.
What it does
Tap-to-speak phrase board for the things you say every day
Free-text mode: type anything and have it spoken aloud right away
Build and reorder your own phrases, with sensible ones ready from the start (“yes”, “no”, “thank you”)
Larger tiles for your most important phrases, so they are easy to find and hit
Choose from the speech voices built into your device, and adjust speaking speed and volume to sound the way you want
Your phrases sync across your devices through iCloud, so your words are always with you
An Apple Watch companion, so you can speak from your wrist when your phone is not in your hand
Speaks in the many languages supported by your device’s built-in voices
smallTalk was made by one person, for a reason that was very personal. It is meant to be the simplest possible way to be heard when you cannot use your own voice.
