Description

Founded by ex-Google AI researchers, SnapCalorie’s photo calorie counter is the easiest and fastest way to track your diet and nutrition. Simply snap a photo or record a quick voice note to log an entire meal or day. Our AI algorithm will instantly provide you with calories, macros, and over 30 micronutrients based on verified USDA database values.

Do you only track calories?

No! We track all macronutrients and over 100 micronutrients. SnapCalorie's AI nutritionist can help you achieve a diverse set of dietary goals.

How accurate is it?

Our photo calorie counter is approximately twice as accurate as visually estimating portion sizes.

Our voice note algorithm is as accurate as the information you give it. Dictating gram values and ingredients as you place items on a food scale allows you to log your food with laboratory-grade precision and NO TYPING.

Don’t want to use a kitchen scale?

Our photo calorie counter can scan the exact volume of your food with the LiDAR depth sensor on your iPhone Pro or our voice note feature can assume average portion sizes if not specified.

How do you measure accuracy?

We were founded by a team of ex-Google AI researchers who co-founded Google Lens and Cloud Vision API. Our AI algorithm is the only one backed by peer-reviewed academic research. In our research, Nutrition5k, we collected a test dataset of 5,000 unique dishes, weighing every ingredient that went onto the plate. To evaluate our algorithm's accuracy, we ran the photo calorie counter on this dataset and compared the results to the true nutrient values.

Average expected error for a 500 calorie dish is +/- 80 calories on an iPhone Pro and +/- 130 on a regular iPhone. By comparison users eyeballing portion size visually were +/- 265 calories on average.

How does it work?

Snap a picture with the photo calorie counter and our AI starts by identifying the different types of food and where they are on the dish, like a nutritionist would. Next, if you have an iPhone Pro, we measure the food's volume with the LiDAR depth sensor. Our AI estimates portion size visually for phones without a depth sensor. Finally, we look up the nutritional values for that type of food and portion size in a trusted database (e.g., USDA) and sum up the totals for you!

If anything looks incorrect, you can fix it yourself OR send it back to our team of nutrition experts for review.

Over time, our photo calorie counter fine-tunes itself based on your specific data, learning from the corrections you make. Always eat meat alternative burgers? Our AI algorithm will slowly learn and adapt to you.

What about cooking fats and oils?

Cooking fats are challenging for anyone counting calories, and our algorithm is no exception. You can add voice notes to hint at the cooking method used or just adjust cooking fats after the initial prediction.

What if something is missing from your barcode database?

One of our favorite features is the ability to take a photo of a nutrition label. Our AI will type in all the values for you in seconds!

Do you integrate with HealthKit?

Yes! SnapCalorie allows you to push the nutritional information from meals logged through our calorie counter into Apple HealthKit.

A great start

Machine learning is still in its early stages when it comes to identifying food with 100% accuracy. In fact, it may never get to that point but I believe this app is already on par with a humans level of accuracy. When manually logging my food I’m probably only reaching about 75% accuracy unless I meticulously measure everything out, which most of us don’t.

Using AI to identify pictures of food on its own, wouldn’t be quite enough to make this app marketable given it still has a lot of room for improvement. So it was especially smart that they have set the app up to pull food from the web (I’m assuming also through the use of an AI integration). I have never used any other calorie tracking app that could do this. Usually, if a food isn’t in their database you have to add it manually. If you want macros and micros to be accurate, you’re left with the task of adding each of these one by one as well. This eliminates the stress of that. Plus, it grades your food based on how healthy it is.

The only area I’m disappointed is it does seem to pull inaccurate micronutrients and macronutrients from the web quite often and it doesn’t seem that I’m able to edit the minute details after I’ve added it to my log, only the serving size. I have been flagging these results as I encounter them.

Best AI app for macro and calorie tracking

I’ve been using this app for the past 3 days and absolutely love it. By far better than my fitness pal, noom, or any of other big competitors out there for meal tracking. I got the annual subscription for $15 (80% off discount) and it’s already been worth the price. Love how easy it is to track your meals either by voice memo, picture, scanning barcodes, or searching the food. Plus it is an integrated chat bot you can ask questions and get helpful information for your health journey (create a high protein meal, when should I cut my calories if I want to lose x amount of weight, how do I go into a calorie deficit) this is basically ChatGPT for meal tracking. 5 gold stars to the Dev Team, you guys did a great job. Excited to see what new releases and tweaks that come in the future. 100% recommend this app and the subscription - definitely take the discount offer.

Changes the macro tracking game

I tried basically every popular macro/calorie/nutrient tracking app and this one is by far and away the best if you’re looking for 1) a simple approach to be aware of calorie limits and macro targets and 2) ease of use with snapping a picture/bar code/AI integration accurate enough to stay on top of goals but not overwhelmingly detailed.

I couldn’t keep up with the other ones and always felt like my estimates were off but this app takes 5% of the time to stay on top of your targets and achieve (in my case) weight loss + protein intake goals. 5 stars thanks team!
