SongCapsule 4+

Rediscover your music library

    • 4.4 • 15 Ratings
    • $4.99

SongCapsule (previously called Next) is an app to rediscover your music library. It’s available on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac with a single purchase.

Using SongCapsule is super easy: all you need to do is connect the app to your music library — it supports Apple Music, iTunes Match, or local synced songs in your device. SongCapsule will locally scan your songs and automatically create mixes and playlists for you based on your favorite artists, genres, and even decades.

With Magic DJ, you can create mixes of artists and genres with different algorithms, like playing more of your top songs or rediscovering hidden gems in your music library. It’s like a shuffle mode — but more intelligent and tailored just for you.

SongCapsule will learn and send a #tbt notification every week to remember you of songs you once loved, but haven’t played for a while. There’s also a special playlist and widget with your forgotten songs.

• Magic DJ with three different configurations
• Playlists
• Apple’s Music app integration
• Siri Suggestions and Shortcuts
• Sharing now playing songs on Instagram and Twitter with a beautiful card image
• CarPlay support
• AirPlay 2
• Light and Dark Modes
• Widgets (including a Lock Screen widget for iOS 16)
• Wind Down support (for iOS 14 and 15)
• Privacy built-in
• Full iPad and Mac support

Great app, but

I really enjoy this app and the playlists they give me, but I would really enjoy it if they added a feature that was sort of like the old iTunes Genius feature where it would make a playlist of songs you already have in addition to songs you don’t have in your library. Hopefully that comes in an update at some point but so far I do love this app.

Flawed software.

The notion of better generated playlists is how this app drew my attention when I was looking online for third-party Apple Music apps. This app does live up to exactly what it says and does so with a clean, easy interface. However, my experience with Next quickly went downhill as I attempted to alter a setting that would prioritize lesser played songs. The app said it was refreshing my music library, which it then continued to do for the better part of an hour as the app ran in the background with my phone awake. After an hour, I closed the app and reopened it, only to be greeted by a loading wheel, which after another hour led me to believe that it would continue forever if I let it. I reinstalled the app and found the same issues again.

Even if this app will run successfully on your phone, paying $4.99 for a glorified shuffle button was only worth it to me because I had leftover gift card funds. As Apple continues to refine and update the functionality of their Music app and Apple Music services, it will be apps like this one that will quickly and increasingly fall into irrelevance.

Hi! We’re sorry that our app didn’t work well for you, but we’d like to better understand what happened with your Magic DJ. If you don’t mind, could you please reach us at (or @Sorcererhat on Twitter) so we can have more details?

We’re committed to continuing to bring new features and extending the functionalities of the Music app, helping to push innovation forward in this area — like many other third-party apps are doing through the incredible Apple Music ecosystem.

This is really cool! I really like that when it creates a “playlist” it is really just queues up a bunch of songs (which is awesome) INSIDE THE MUSIC APP. Amazing 👏

I would love to see more playlists added, maybe ones where it can sprinkle in related songs (but then I guess information would have to leave the device 😔). Also after reading the privacy notice, this app was a must buy — all on device and no tracking.

Thank you for making this awesome app!
