SpaceAudit shows you where your disk space went, and tells you what it would
cost to get it back.
Most storage tools show you a number and a Clean button. SpaceAudit shows you the
consequence. Select anything and it explains what the item actually is, what
specifically breaks if you remove it, and what recovering it would take — before
you act, not after.
SEE WHERE THE SPACE WENT
• Space map — a treemap of the folders you have granted access to, sized by what
they actually occupy on disk. Click to inspect, double-click to zoom in.
• Folders — a sortable tree with a risk badge on every row.
• Largest files — the biggest files found, each labelled with what it belongs to.
A 679 MB file buried under a UUID reads as "in the simulator iPhone 17 Pro
(iOS 26.5)", not as an unhelpful path.
• Cleanup — known cache and backup locations, measured and grouped by risk, each
expandable so you can keep some items and remove others.
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DELETING
Every item is classified, and the classification is specific:
• Safe to remove — regenerates itself. Costs time, not data.
• Check first — yours, but obtainable again.
• You will lose state — settings and history you would rebuild by hand.
• Possible data loss — may be the only copy that exists.
The distinctions are the point. Xcode derived data is disposable; an Xcode
archive holds the dSYM you need to symbolicate crash reports from a build you
already shipped. Docker images can be pulled again; the named volumes inside the
same disk image cannot. Items in iCloud Drive are not local caches — deleting one
removes it from every device on the account.
NOTHING IS DELETED
SpaceAudit moves items to the Trash and does nothing else. There is no
permanent-delete path anywhere in the app. Anything above "safe" requires an
explicit acknowledgement that names the specific loss first. A Moved to Trash
list records everything the app removed, where it came from, and offers Put Back
— which refuses to overwrite whatever has appeared at the original location since.
WHERE A SAFER COMMAND EXISTS, IT SAYS SO
Some things should not be deleted by hand even when they are large. Local Time
Machine snapshots want tmutil. The Go module cache is read-only by design and
wants go clean -modcache. Docker wants its own prune. SpaceAudit shows you the
command instead of doing the wrong thing.
BUILT FOR DEVELOPERS TOO
It recognises Xcode derived data, device support, archives, simulator devices
(by device name, runtime and last boot — not by UUID), and the Homebrew, npm,
pnpm, Yarn, Gradle, Maven, Cargo, Go and pip caches.
PRIVACY
SpaceAudit contains no networking code of any kind. Nothing is collected, nothing
is transmitted, there are no analytics and no accounts. It reads your disk and
shows you the result.
WHAT THIS VERSION CAN SEE
This is a sandboxed Mac App Store app. It can only read folders you explicitly
grant it through the standard macOS open panel, and it remembers those grants
between launches. It cannot read system directories such as /System, /Library or
/private, and it cannot see other user accounts. Grant your home folder to cover
everything you can realistically clean up.
Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Fixes a problem where moving items to the Trash failed with a permission error
after relaunching SpaceAudit, and some ordinary files were wrongly marked as
protected. Folders you have granted now stay available for as long as the app
is open.
Also fixes Show Trash and the Open Trash menu item, which could open your home
folder instead of the Trash.
No action is needed after updating. Your granted folders are remembered as
before.
