Editors’ Notes

Friendly competition with a like-minded sporting community is a big part of Strava's appeal. More than just a GPS, Strava shares your rides and runs automatically, so it's really low maintenance. See your rank on your favourite segment, join distance challenges, and follow your friends, pros and even foes. As they say, "If it’s not on Strava, it didn’t happen".

Love it but bummed out

I love strava & will continue to use the app but am disappointed with recent updates. I really enjoyed the leaderboard & monthly comparisons, which can now only be accessed through subscription. I would consider becoming a subscriber because I am a huge fan, but the cost has been a deterrent. I can understand their decision to try & make the app more profitable. However, I think they should have given longtime users the option of buying those features at a lower cost. I am simply someone who loves running. But I am not training for anything & given the surgeries I’ve had it is unlikely I ever will. Some of the other subscribed features may not suitable for me because of that. I want to support the app but I just don’t think the price is that accessible to everyone. I understand $60/year isn’t much, but when you’re a newly unemployed college student it’s difficult justifying that extra expense. I still really enjoy the app, I just hope these changes don’t alter how much I use it. I think if i never experienced those features I might feel differently. I am sad to see them go. Wish there was more of a middle ground for less competitive individuals.

Bad form, Strava

It pains me to write this review - I’ve enjoyed using Strava for several years. Until today, I would have rated it five stars. However, Strava thought that taking away almost all of the formerly free features and making them subscription-only, in the midst of a pandemic and economic CRISIS, while people are finding solace in exercise and adventure... Really, Strava? And to knock out the previously tiered subscription features (which was a great option) when many folks don’t need the full-fledged, robust premium data? That’s just rude. It reads as greedy. Who knows, maybe Strava really couldn’t make it work financially with all of their existing premium subscribers. Maybe they truly believe their users are unaffected by the current economic crisis. All I know is that the two or so features that I actually enjoyed using (being able to see my own segment history and seeing the basic leaderboards) are now inaccessible unless I want to shell out $60 annually. It’s nice that Strava shows you your route, average speed, and the amount of time spent on your activity, but there are many other apps that do that for free. The only thing left is the social media aspect, which is cute, but I can get that elsewhere. That’s really all that distinguishes it from all the other apps that track basic data. Without being able to see my PR’s in the context of my history makes Strava kind of useless. Bummer, Strava. I’m so disappointed.
