iPhone
Play your computer's sound through your iPhone over USB. Lossless 16-bit stereo with adjustable latency. Subscription required, with a 3-day free trial.
Tether Audio turns your iPhone into a speaker for your computer. Plug in the USB cable, start the free Tether Sender program on the computer, and everything the computer plays comes out of the iPhone, its headphones, or whatever else is connected to it.
Subscription required. Tether Audio is free to download, and all of its features, including streaming audio from the computer, require an auto-renewable subscription purchased in the app. New subscribers get a 3-day free trial. The subscription's title, length, and price are shown in the app before you subscribe.
Audio travels only over the cable. The app never uses Wi-Fi or cellular data, so there is nothing to pair, no network to configure, and no interference from a busy router. The stream is uncompressed 16-bit PCM at 44.1 or 48 kHz in stereo, the same quality the computer produces.
Latency is adjustable. Choose Low for about 20 ms when sound needs to line up with what is on screen, Normal for 40 ms in everyday use, or Stable for 80 ms when the USB bus is shared with other devices. A buffer meter on the main screen shows how much audio is queued and the estimated end-to-end delay, so you can see the effect of each setting as you change it.
Playback continues with the screen locked or the app in the background. Lock screen controls pause and resume playback, and each press is also sent to the computer as a media key so the music there stops too. Phone calls and Siri pause playback automatically, and it resumes when they finish. If the cable is unplugged or the sender restarts, the app keeps listening for a period you choose and reconnects without being reopened.
Settings cover the listening port, the latency preset, how long to stay ready after a disconnect, mixing with other apps, and pausing when headphones are unplugged. A statistics panel reports underruns, dropped packets, and drift correction for anyone who wants to check the quality of the link.
You need an iPhone running iOS 17 or later, a USB cable, and the Tether Sender program on the computer, available free from tether-audio.com. On Windows, the Apple Devices app or iTunes must be installed for the USB driver. To send all of a computer's audio to the phone, including on a PC without speakers, the sender can capture from a virtual audio cable and make it the default output device.
Subscription details: payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase, or at the end of the free trial if you do not cancel before it ends. The subscription renews automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the current period ends. You can manage or cancel the subscription in your Apple Account settings at any time.
