New App is an improvement and UpWork is Awesome
Overall, UpWork is pretty good. Even though the rates I get paid on UpWork are on average 25-50% lower than with my other clients, I still like working on UpWork because I do not have to worry about invoices and clients always pay on time. I also get access to a larger volume of clients with interesting projects. The new app is is also a big improvement because the old app terrible. I also like that UpWork keeps making improvements.
This app lacks functionality
Im not sure why Upwork needs two apps- one for hiring managers and one for freelancers, it seems a bit excessive to me. Not to mention, I’ll get a notification that I have a message and when I open the app, its a blank white screen. I always have to close the app then re-open it so I can read or respond to messages. Seems a bit ridiculous that someone whose base is 30+% IT would have an app with glitches.
Additionally, since I had an active contract, I had not applied to other contracts. So Uwpork made my profile private. Thats not fair to hiring manager or freelancers. How can hiring managers source top or rising talent if they cannot see profiles? How are you providing a good experience to your freelancers if our profiles are private and then we have to PAY to make ourselves public again? Since I work on both sides of the platform; both as a hiring manager and a freelancer, I can say with absolutely certainty, once my contracts are up, I will not be back.
Upwork takes more and more from users
Upwork already takes 20% if what you earn, and they have recently made it harder for clients to find top rated freelancers by forcing clients to pay for a “plus” subscription.
Now, they are going to start charging freelancers just for APPLYING to jobs. They say it’s not that much, but it will definitely add up. They also claim that they make t easier for freelancers applying to jobs because there will be less competition, but there’s only more competition because they started making it harder for clients to find freelancers by forcing them to use Plus...
All this is to line the pockets of their executives, while they ALREADY make 20% off of the work that WE do.
I will definitely be looking into alternatives to Upwork, it’s starting to become less and less sustainable.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
