WriteOff is for U.S. freelancers, contractors, creators and sole proprietors who want a straight answer about an expense — before they buy, or while the receipt is still in their hand. TAKE A PICTURE Photograph the item, the receipt or the workspace, or just type the question. WriteOff identifies it and puts it in the right expense category. Correct anything it gets wrong. OR LOG IT YOURSELF, FREE Name the purchase and pick its category, and get the same questions and the same cited result. Logging expenses yourself never uses a check. ANSWER ONLY WHAT MATTERS The questions come from the tax rule itself: what it cost, what share is business use, when you started using it, who was at the meal. A few questions, not a questionnaire. GET THE RULE, NOT A GUESS Every answer is one of six plain states: likely deductible, partially deductible, special rules apply, probably not deductible, need more information, or professional review recommended. Each shows the math, the reasons, and the IRS text it rests on, with a link to the source. VEHICLES, HOME OFFICES, MEALS, TRAVEL, EQUIPMENT Handles the rules people get wrong: the 50% business-use test and the section 179 cap for heavy SUVs, the exclusive-use test for a home office, the 50% limit on business meals, primarily-business trips, the de minimis safe harbor for equipment, education and work clothing. KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY Ask about something before you buy it and see how it may be treated. A deduction reduces taxable income; WriteOff never pretends it is a refund. SAVE THE PROOF Save the expense with its photo, receipt and business purpose. Records stay on your phone. Search and filter by year, category, decision and receipt. READY FOR TAX TIME Export a CSV, a PDF summary and a receipt bundle for your accountant or bookkeeping software. If the guidance behind a saved record changes, WriteOff tells you. WHAT IT IS NOT WriteOff is educational guidance and record organization for federal income tax. It is not tax advice and does not replace a CPA, enrolled agent or tax attorney. It covers sole proprietors, independent contractors and single-member LLCs for recent tax years, each with that year's IRS figures; anything else is flagged for professional review rather than guessed. YOUR PHOTOS Photos you scan and questions you type are sent to WriteOff's server and to Google's Gemini AI to be identified or read, and are not stored by us. Receipt images are read on your phone; only their text is sent. Whether something is deductible is decided by a rules engine built from published IRS sources, not by the AI. WRITEOFF PRO Your first photo and question checks are free, and logging expenses yourself is always free. Pro adds unlimited photo and question checks, receipt scanning, unlimited saved records, multiple businesses and tax-time export. WriteOff Pro is available as an annual subscription with a free trial or as a monthly subscription.
