Getting Over It

The premise of Getting Over It is simple. Maneuver a hammer-wielding man in a cauldron over a mountain. You might be tempted to ask why, but trust us—don’t. You won’t get any answers. What matters is that you roll up your sleeves and prepare to go to battle in a true test of physics and endurance.

This is a punishing game, but we can’t stop playing.

The man, hammer, and cauldron have a weight and momentum that feel incredibly realistic. Push off the ground with the hammer, and hook onto objects to pull the man up. Swing from here to there, stringing together combos based on angle and inertia. It all feels pretty good.

You’re going to fail. A lot. And there aren’t any checkpoints, so when you mess up, there’s no restarting.

Unlike most games, which celebrate your successes, Getting Over It delights in your failures. You will grit your teeth. Curse under your breath. Contemplate pulling out your hair. And after you tumble off a ledge and fall back to the very beginning of the stage, Bennett Foddy, the game's creator, will antagonize you with commentary.

Here’s the thing: Despite the difficulty—which borders on ludicrous—the experience is fun, the presentation hilarious. And if you endure the mountain’s many challenges, you might feel like you’ve bested Everest.
