Eugene Park and Thien Tran created HoneyDue to help couples better manage their finances together. Little did they know their app might serve as couples therapy for some.

Park recently received a message from a woman who constantly fought with her husband about money. “She said this app may have saved their marriage,” he explains.

The anecdote doesn’t surprise him.

“Couples who think they’re arguing about money aren’t really arguing about money,” Park says. “They’re arguing about trust, transparency, or autonomy.”

HoneyDue
works like many traditional finance apps: Create a profile, add bank and credit card accounts, then track your balances and activity. The magic happens once your partner creates a profile too, and you both start toggling between the app’s joint- and single-finance modes.

HoneyDue allows couples to share all—or only some—financial information with each other.

For every account you add, you can choose to keep everything private, share just the balance, or share both balance and all activity. “It’s a way for couples to protect their autonomy and argue less about frivolous purchases,” says Park.

The HoneyDue team has discovered that younger generations, mostly millennials, are struggling with financial literacy.

Couples who think they’re arguing about money aren’t really arguing about money, they’re arguing about trust, transparency, or autonomy.

“Couples are marrying later, living together longer before getting married, are increasingly dual-income, and make more joint decisions,” says Park. “They’re doing it in a very messy way. We’re the first app to hopefully make that easier and destress that habit."

Money can be a sensitive subject for couples of any age. HoneyDue is the only tool we’ve seen to help seamlessly manage money together. So have a talk with your S.O., and don’t let finances get in the way of a happy relationship.
