The text-driven game Device 6 reads like a traditional mystery novel…until it doesn’t. It opens with the tale of a young girl named Anna, who wakes up on a strange island. As you swipe the screen to learn more, the text of the novel starts twisting and bending, as if the words themselves are creating pathways. Soon a castle looms in the distance and sentences become staircases and corridors.

Device 6 is a game like no other. You’ll soon realize that just reading along to follow the story isn’t going to be enough—clues and puzzles have been hidden throughout the text and accompanying images all along, and it’s up to you to solve each riddle. Some are simple, requiring a only few seconds of backtracking to find the answer. For others you might need a piece of scratch paper (or your trusty Notes app). A second set of eyes couldn’t hurt either.

The game’s twists and turns will have you pondering each plot point long after you’ve completed it, and the subtle mix of audio/visual cues is hauntingly powerful. This just might be the best thing you read—and play—all year.
