RISK: Global Domination

First released in the 1950s, Risk has dominated family game nights for decades. But with the game’s more than 100 tiny plastic pieces to manage, keeping your armies from vanishing between the couch cushions is as challenging as protecting Australia from your sister’s tank brigade.

Perhaps it’s time to catapult your sibling rivalry into the future. Risk: Global Domination captures everything you love about the original, with a few modern twists. Ready your troops and let the battle begin!

Colorful, cartoonish graphics bring the classic Risk board to life.

The basics: Set on a real(ish) world map, Risk has you build up armies to take over territories. Move your troops across the land, expanding your domain one country at a time by strategically attacking your enemies—and defending what you’ve managed to grab.

The victor of each battle is determined by a roll of the dice, though bigger armies have better odds. Risk rewards aggressive play: The more territories you occupy at the end of each round, the more troops you’ll accumulate.

Best for: Risk is a cannon blast of fun, whether you’re taking on computer-controlled opponents, playing against strangers online, or passing around an iPhone with up to five friends. Also, the larger the screen, the better the experience. Play on iPad or Apple TV, if you can!

Mix up your strategies with alternate maps like a pirate seaport and the United States.

Why it’s awesome: This version of Risk has all the intense, Machiavellian strategy of the classic edition but adds an emphasis on speed. The blitz feature allows you to autoroll dice when attacking, so battles are swift. You can also set time limits on turns to prevent opponents from taking all day to plot their moves.

Risk: Global Domination also keeps the conflict fresh with a number of different maps. Bored with the continents? Battle it out in the dense boroughs of New York City, or even in a pirate level shaped like a skull and crossbones. Ahoy!
