Practice your casting, witches and wizards! Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells marks the first time Harry, Ron, Hermione, and the rest of the characters from the Wizarding World have Apparated (to use proper Potter lingo) to a match-3 game.

But like Mad-Eye Moody sipping Polyjuice Potion, this stunningly beautiful puzzler isn’t quite what it seems.

“When you say match-3, people think, ‘Oh, everything has been done.’ It’s actually the opposite,” says Mark Turmell, senior creative director for developer Zynga. “This is match-3-elevated.”

Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells soars past run-of-the-mill gem-swapping. Wish you could cast a spell to solve a tricky puzzle? Hold on to your Sorting Hat! You can learn dozens of charms and incantations. Cast Accio to summon gem-busting winged keys. Or try an explosive Incendio to remove pesky obstacles!

And as you level up, upgrades add extra benefits to each spell you cast. In no time, even Voldemort will fear your puzzling power.

The game’s nearly 1,000 puzzles chronicle Harry and the gang’s early adventures, from their first year at Hogwarts to partway through the events of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (new puzzles, eventually covering all eight films, are added frequently).

Iconic moments are memorialized on the dynamic game board. Mischievous Chocolate Frogs wreak havoc. Bathroom trolls run roughshod over gems. Self-absorbed professor Gilderoy Lockhart showers the board with autographed photos that need to be cleared. Summon collectible critters like the adorable Pygmy Puff and the fiery Phoenix to help out!

“We regularly rewatch the films and try to work out what a hazard or blocker would be for a particular scene,” says Turmell.

The main story is just one way to play through Puzzles & Spells. Partake in themed daily events, or join a club and work through leagues for extra rewards and power-ups. But the game’s most impressive bit of sorcery is conjuring up an innovative take on puzzle games—one that makes you feel as powerful as Dumbledore himself.
