I have many apps on my phone, most of which I hardly use. There are only a handful that I adopt as part of my everyday life. Day One has very quickly become one of those. I was looking for a journal type app, saw the great reviews and decided to download on that basis. What sets these well coded apps apart is that the free version is so functional, and do not rely on missing functionality to get you to start paying. No, they are complete just as they are and you end up upgrading because you know the upgrade will be worth it and that the developers deserve it.
Formatting Issues

I’ve been happily using Day One for the past 5 years. The last two upgrades have progressively made my experience with this app worse.I use Apple’s text replacement shortcuts extensively. The second last update stopped, among others, the correct display of italic formatting (which is done by inserting asterisks (*) in the text) unless the spacebar is pressed. This is not an issue if the asterisks are at the beginning and end of a text snippet, but it definately becomes one if the asterisks are inside the text snippet. This previously worked flawlessly in Day One.The current update have caused text replacement with asterisks to work even worse. A phrase like *Netflix* now displays as *Netflix* flix*I would have liked to discuss the above issues directly with the developers, but the “Contact Support” button in the app just brings up a screen telling me “Something went wrong”.In general: I get the distinct impression that the developers have been tampering with an app that was for all intents and purpose - about 2 or 3 updates ago - as close to perfect as it would ever get .I’m also annoyed by the fact that the developers have gradually transformed the app into “Rent Ware”. While I realise that they have to make a living, it would become financially impossible for many of us if every developer started charging rent - I have close to 300 apps on my iPhone, which is not uncommon, given the millions of apps in the App Store. In closing: Please stop embellishing an app that was once a model of elegance and functionally close to flawless.

Better handwriting capability needed
kristivantonder
I really love this app. I upgraded to premium recently because of the Apple Pencil integration to allow drawing or handwritten notes. I can’t say that I like the way it’s been integrated. It creates a separate image of the handwritten notes and is not possible to edit it. You can add to it, sure, but once the image is created you can’t manipulate the handwritten text like you would in an app like notability. I would like to see a more integrated approach to the ability to write in ones journal by hand...much like you get in Notability. I was using notability before, but that is more for notes, like at work etc. day One is far better as a journal, I hope you improve the writing feature soon.
