Why does OneDrive have such a huge system impact?
InvincibleX
OneDrive is my primary cloud solution at home and for work. I love the functionality and its integration with Office. However, I just don’t get why it has to have such a huge energy impact.I have a new 16" Macbook, 16GB, 8 core, i9 flavour, that seems to be able to handle everything I throw at it except, OneDrive. It is the only app that I have that manages to get the MacBook fired up. Even with nothing else running, and with plenty of free RAM, just opening OneDrive, and the fan goes into high gear and the MacBook starts heat up, this is with and sometimes without any active syncs. The problem gets worse when am working on a document, in say Word, with two or three people. Sometimes I prefer switching it off, which defeats the purpose of having a cloud based services. Is this an optimisation issue and is this something that can be solved?😳
The worst battery hog on my Macbook Pro
Samwise_ZA
From when you boot (cause now thats a thing needed with Big Sur) and it rescans your entire OneDrive contents for 30 minutes, totally destroying your battery and nearly halving your possible battery-only work time for the day, to just basic sync of a file or few only, ramping up the CPU to 100% for minutes on end. OneDrive is by far the worst on resource ustilisation you'll find. It's almost like their goal was to be the worst. It take effort to be this bad.I LOVE O365, but my G@#$ the OneDrive app is bad with resources. When I run on battery, i NEED to run on battery. Having OneDrive cripple my total work time like this costs me.
OneDrive Drains Battery and Overheats CPU
Ettiene.PVT
OneDrive works as it should, but with it's own set of problems. If you need to use OneDrive as part of your Business Cloud Requirements, and you have a Mac... good luck. There's no getting around using it. So the pitfalls I encountered are:1. You need to Sync the ENTIRE library, before you are able to de-select folders you don't want to Sync.2. It drains your Macbook Battery at an alarming rate. Without running OneDrive, I can go for almost an entire work day and not need to charge. With OneDrive active, my battery is drained within an hour and a half.3. My CPU overheats within minutes, even if I close all other apps. I know this by using CleanMyMac (excellent App, If you don't yet have it, get it.)I also encountered errors with long file names, saved by other userns on the same network. As usual, Microsoft at its finest...
Developer Response
Thanks for your feedback, and we're sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with OneDrive. The items you mentioned are things we are aware of and are working to improve, although we don't have any specific timelines to share. That said, your battery draining in an hour and a half sounds like a different bug we'd like to investigate. Please email onedrivemacosfb@microsoft.com and we can take a look.
Keeps crashing
Zay2910
The app is great when it actually does function as it should because as I work, it saves online automatically. However, the app crashes at least once every one to two weeks. When it crashes, you cannot open OneDrive at all and the only solution is to force quit in the activity monitor, uninstall it and reinstall it again.
Thank you for using OneDrive. We are always looking to update OneDrive to bring you the latest performance improvements and bug fixes for the best experience.
