Why spend hundreds of dollars on an extra device while your phone can do the same and more? Find, Create, Import and Navigate great Roads and track your Riding Adventures. Although Scenic is designed for the motorcycle it's used by many old-timer and convertible drivers as well. It's basically for anyone with a motorised vehicle who enjoys a day (or longer) of touring.
Scenic offers many many options to plan your tours: (1) Select a location and be navigate there along curvy roads. (2) Create a route yourself by dropping up to 200 via points with fast, short or curvy roads to get from one point to the next. (3) Import routes through many ways and many sources. For example: Scenic integrates with the Furkot, RouteYou and Kurviger.de online routeplanners and the Scenic WebApp makes it easy to import GPS files (GPX, KML, KMZ, GDB, ITN) and Google (My) Maps URLs. Simply drag and drop GPS files and copy/paste Google Maps URL's in the WebApp and the route will be waiting for you in Scenic on your phone. (4) As the only app of it's kind Scenic can make nearly every imported route navigable, even if it has thousands of points.
Of course Scenic wouldn't be a good alternative to Motorcycle GPS units if it didn't offer navigation. The navigation screen has been especially designed for use on the motorcycle, with large fonts, a clear route line and a screen layout that enables you to see next turns in a quick glance. And of course Scenic also gives voice instructions (in 21 languages). Next to that Scenic has special features to guide you to the start point of a route and skip via points if you take a (deliberate or accidental) detour.
Scenic's tracking feature allows you to save your touring adventures for ever. With every ride you take, wether you're navigating a route or not, your ride is tracked. Scenic records your speed, the roads you took and the pictures taken along the way. Every trip you ever took can be shared on social media, exported to GPX files and even turned into a navigable route so you can ride it again.
* Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
* Scenic has an optional Premium Subscription that gives you access to Premium Features (Voice Guidance, Route Import & Route & Trip export). The subscription automatically renews every year. The first payment will be charged to your iTunes Account at confirmation of the purchase. It automatically renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24-hours before the end of the current period. Your account will be charged again within 24-hours prior to the end of the current period. Subscriptions may be managed by you and auto-renewal may be turned off by going to your Account Settings in the iTunes Store, also reachable through 'Manage Subscriptions' from the Scenic Settings menu.Current price for premium subscription is $10.99 USD per year, and may vary from country to country.
Scenic was already the top ranked and best rated motorcycle navigation app in most countries, but now Scenic 2 will blow you away! A new design, new features and countless improvements, all based on user feedback. Just to name a few: round trip suggestions, stops ánd via points, improved route import, elevation profiles, better curvy routing algorithm, folders to organise your routes and rides, improved voice instructions, 'glove friendly' user interface, insights in your riding patterns. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Scenic 2 is built on the lessons learned from Scenic 1. It turns your phone into a true competitor for the big brand motorcycle GPS units; in some ways it's even better. It's new, it's improved, it's more value for money and it's free to try, including the premium features. You don't even need to create an account. There are no pesky sign-up forms upon launch. So, let's get rolling...
Ratings and Reviews
Very useful app for motorcycle trip planning and riding.
I have had the app for about 3 months and, with the assistance of the developer, have come to depend on it for both functions listed in the title.
Planning. Using IPad, the screen is large enough to create routes, which allows you to use the most unique feature supplied: the curvy setting. Once you get the curvy route drawn, use waypoints to lock them in, then edit the route allowing highways and/or efficient routing, and you can plan a day’s travel to meet your needs. The tip from Guido, the developer, that made this more possible is to look at saved trips in the edit mode, which allows for full screen viewing. Syncing your ride from the IPad and then on your phone allows you to take the route to the bike.
Riding. Once you have a trip route saved, or if you import and edit a publicly posted ride, you can then navigate it. The in-route map and turn-by-turn directions blue toothed into my helmet make following the route very easy. I like the features that show you where the next turn will be, speed limit and current speed and the map details.
Certainly download and use this app with the credits supplied, but take the time to learn how to use it. Once you do, if you like to plan out routes and then ride them, the price of subscription and credits needed for off-line maps, can be justified by the features described above, in my opinion.
Best bang for your buck in motorcycle routing
Sure there are better options out there for routing and navigating your rides but they’ll cost you $500+.
This app combined with a phone mount and power source is just as useful. Route sharing is easy and uses standard GpX files that are fairly universal no matter what system your friends are using.
Creating a route within the app is easy and can be done without struggle while eating lunch and shared with everyone immediately.
One of my favorite features is to search for already popular rides and edit them to cater to your needs along the route. This is like having a tour guide everywhere you go as many local riders share good routes for you to enjoy when you’re in a new area and for the most part I’ve found them to be some amazing rides I never would’ve found otherwise.
I’d recommend anyone give this app a try. Spend an hour or two playing around with it and I’m sure you’ll start to understand how it works and find new rides around your area you probably never knew of.
One downside is when your routing preference is set to “extra curvy” it will send you down a lot of dead end roads and it’s especially good at seeking out roundabouts. Not a major issue, just pay attention when letting it plan your route for you and you can fix it in less than 5 minutes using waypoints.
Compared to GPS
Scenic is as good or better than a dedicated GPS unit. It turns your mobile device into an intuitive GPS with capabilities of creating your own routes . Yes , I know that most navigation apps have that feature but with Scenic it’a easier to import any of your favorites routes. . Personally I don’t like having a lot of farkle on my bike so just having only my mobile device keeps things simple.
And since most think mobile navigational apps are susceptible to lack of data coverage ( cell coverage ) with Scenic you just download the offline maps you need . They give a certain amount of credits so that you can download a good amount of maps but if you need more just purchase more credits and your good to go. Again just be sure that your mobile device has the room for extra data.
The reason I gave it 4 of 5 stars was due to the voice prompts. Just don’t like they way it sounds. Besides that it’s the go to motorcycle navigation app for me , go ahead give it a try.
