Langmate helps you make Japanese friends, whether you're learning Japanese, planning a trip, or simply love Japan. Over 65% of Langmate users are Japanese. Find people with shared interests and get to know each other through casual, everyday chats.
JAPAN IS THE STARTING POINT. FRIENDSHIP IS THE REASON TO STAY.
Maybe you love the same manga. Maybe you're curious about a local festival, or want to know what life in Japan is really like.
Talk about anime, food, music, travel, or whatever you've been into lately. Share something about your own country, too. You don't need perfect Japanese—or a plane ticket—to start a conversation.
MEET JAPANESE PEOPLE WHO SHARE YOUR INTERESTS
Browse profiles and interest tags, then swipe to send a LIKE. When you both LIKE each other, you match and can start chatting.
Use filters such as nationality and age to help find people you'd like to meet. Some filters require a paid plan.
MAKE FRIENDS BEFORE YOU VISIT JAPAN
Planning a trip to Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto? Use Virtual Location to explore profiles in your destination before you arrive. Ask new friends about their favorite foods, neighborhoods, and places to visit.
Already in Japan? Around Me helps you discover people nearby.
PRACTICE JAPANESE THROUGH EVERYDAY CONVERSATIONS
Tell a friend about your weekend, ask about an expression you've just learned, or help them practice English. Choose the languages you'd both like to use and learn from each other as you chat.
Send voice messages to practice speaking, share video messages, or use the handwriting tool to try writing kana and kanji together.
A LITTLE HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT
Use in-chat translation to check the meaning of a message when you get stuck. Correction and reply features are also available to support your conversations.
Start with a short hello. Ask about something on their profile. Take it one message at a time.

An absolute NECESSITY for anyone learning ANY language!!

This is such an amazing app. I’m in model UN and the way I approach subjects/topics goes with trying to get in contact with some people from those countries alongside of actual research from the countries. In all reality the app is a 4.5/5, but there’s no 1/2 star, so rounding down to 4 felt wrong, and in the end it is truly worthy of a 5. I’ll explain some of its flaws briefly:They have a feature which lets you earn free coins by watching some ads, but no matter if you’ve never watched a video it’ll tell you that you’ve watched the maximum amount of ads and can’t get free coins. Newest update deleted my messages, but it’s not much of a problem, but I see how it can be for some. The chat feature itself has such a questionable design where to your conversations split into a “friends” and “chats” category that doesn’t matter anyway since they both lead to the same thing.Other than that, the pros are nameless, and buying coins is a MUST! I buy about $10 worth a month, on top of getting the free daily coins! SERIOUSLY SUCH AN AMAZING APP
It’s pretty good 1 flaw though

The app is actually pretty sweet. Basically the language tinder app lol lots of nice people willing to learn and teach or just be friends. The only issue is the “coin” system. Obviously since it’s a free app they have to use some system to make money but it costs coins to do everything from searching new people and checking their profiles or each message you send someone costs coins or if someone sees your profile to uncover their face it cost coins. There are free ways to earn coins by watching 5 ads you get 40 coins total for the day but that’s about it. The coin system is a hassle and makes it hard to chat because you don’t know if the other person has enough to continue chatting or not unless they say so. Other than that pretty useful app it’s always fun meeting new people and exploring cultures.

This is a really great app and all, but the fact that this is a place to learn languages does not change the mindsets of the creeps out there. I’ve met some really cool people and all, but most were total pervs. I just want you to warn you that if you try out this app, please tread with caution. Even if you’re lonely or whatever and just looking for international friends, please don’t give the creeps—under any circumstances—the gratification of sending your picture to them, or whatever personal things they ask. You are under no under obligation to give them the satisfaction. Even if they seem genuine and it seems harmless, you don’t know what they’ll do with your pictures or whatever else they ask for. Even though this app is advertised as a fun way to find friends with similar interests and whatnot, at the end of the day it’s just like any other social media out there. I really can’t stress that enough. Thankfully nothing has happened to me, but I’m putting this out there in hopes that nothing happens to y’all either.
Out of points, locked out

So the app works like the tinder app that makes you swipe through hundreds of people, except it’s for language exchanging and with the added bonus that you can’t specify which country you want to see people from. (For example, I wanted to learn Ukrainian, but the system picks English speakers from English speaking countries all because I set English as a secondary language.) You can’t find the right people except by swiping cards or looking for locals, so basically all my starting points got wasted on swiping (which costs 20 pts if denied) because I kept on approving people instead of denying (as it felt wrong to outright deny them), and now I have 0 points with no knowledge of if the app is worth paying $12 for as messaging requires payment. It’s funny also that when out of points, you can’t even see your own friends list (the “match” list). In this way, HOW on earth AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW IF I WANT TO TALK TO THAT PERSON OR NOT?For all I know, you can find free alternatives on the web… I mean I can try hellotalk, but since I’m Japanese, I thought it’d be easier to find friends with this one.
Bug fixes and performance improvements.
