USED BY PROFESSIONALS
"Musically life changing app! Amazing app that every serious musician should have! Bravo."
-- Richard Stoelzel, President World Trumpet Society & Professor of Trumpet, McGill.
"I am amazed how well the Modacity system works."
-- Anne, amateur violinist
“As a trumpet player (ergo, loudmouthed and opinionated) I’ve often been wrong. However, in this case I’ve never been wronger. The app has become the central pillar of my practice schedule and I’d be lost without it. With that in mind, the price is cheap!!”
-- John Thirkell, trumpet & flugelhorn - Jamiroquai, Level 42, Buddy Rich Band
"Swiss army knife to organize and focus my music practice. I can’t imagine my life without it"
-- Armen, product manager & duduk player
“Just wanted to tell you how helpful this app has been over the years. I got my first regional job at 640 hours and then one more regional gig and a one year with a big orchestra at 930 hours on the app.”
-- Samuel Wamhoff, Principal Trombone - Modesto Symphony Orchestra; 2nd Trmb - Stockton Symphony; Acting 2nd - San Francisco Opera

I discovered this app on the Mind Over Finger podcast (which if you’re into effective practice and reading this you should probably check out too), I’ve only been using for a week but I definitely see an improvement in my approach to practice and probably even motivation.I use it in combination with other apps since I find the subscription model too much for me, I’m not exactly sure about the extra features on it but the only thing I feel I’m missing in the free version is the unlimited notes. Weirdly I find that that limitation ends up helping me focus on the one note I do have per piece and maybe even works for the best. I use other apps (and pen and paper) for more detailed journaling and note taking, but the practice list feature is unique here so I mainly use that.Definitely recommend the free version, I mean it’s free and if you don’t see the benefit of the subscription it still has enough features to be useful. I’m guessing the subscription is geared towards classical musicians or maybe to make you more accountable to yourself. There is an bug where when you click the note you have while a recording is being played the recording stops and doesn’t play again anymore (virtually lost) so if you try taking a note while listening it won’t work
The only app you need for structured practice

A great app for any activity- musical or non-musical - that benefits from a structured practice routine. I’ve been using it to practice piano. I used to keep a practice notebook but of course you have to keep writing the same entries (“Group 1 scales, Beethoven sonata”) over and over. Then if you’re like me and enjoy seeing summary stats, you then have to manually tally up your practice time. This is archaic - Of course an app can take care of this! And you can see summary stats not just of overall practice, but of practice lists (think, a Beethoven sonata) and the practice items within (think, the various sections of a Beethoven sonata)! There’s also a deliberate practice feature that I’ve only just started using. There’s also a great support team that you can message and they will respond within a day, whether it be for musical questions or questions about the app. A recent update broke the summary tables, but Jared helped me resolve it and was very responsive.Yes, the app is somewhat pricey but think of the terrible meals at casual restaurants that people will drop $90 on for a single meal whereas they could have put that $90 towards something that would help them better themselves and master a new skill! The people at Modacity obviously care about music and their product and I for one am happy to compensate them for their work. My only suggestion would be to offer a lifetime subscription for a single price - I’d pay for that.
Developer Response
Hello there! Jared from support here. I'm thrilled to hear that Modacity has been helpful in structuring your practice! I'm also glad you feel we provide great support. The team and I are always glad to help out in any way we can. Thank you for sharing your experience with us and other musicians. There are actually a few other subscription options, like a lifetime subscription. Just to let you know, you can find those options on our blog:https://www.modacity.co/blog/modacity-subscriptions-discounts/
Excellent for Systematic Practice
Waitlossgyrl
This app is completely customizeable and helps you practice smart to avoid wasting time and reinforcing bad technique or wrong notes or rhythms. You can create a database of repertoire and systematically review it to keep it all fresh and in your fingers. You can shake your device to randomize repertoire review. You can write notes that go with each piece. You can record yourself to track progress and those recording are stored with that piece or technique. You can hear how each technique has improved or deteriorated with time. You can schedule technique practice to make sure you keep up with technique details that you need to learn, improve or keep fresh. I’m planning to show the data and recording to my teacher to ask her to critique my practice strategies. When I bring this app to the lesson she will be able to see an exact history of how I practiced each technique, listen to brief recordings of my practice technique and help me to troubleshoot my practicing to help me improve even faster. One final item on my wishlist for this app would be to video record myself as well. As an early intermediate violin student, I like to monitor my posture and body mechanics. I currently use my camera app, but it would be really nice to be able to make and store very brief videos and make notes about things to improve. Even better, a candid camera option that would take random occasional video of me practicing for thoroughly candid review of positioning.
Super-effective Practice Tool

Modacity has truly helped me change practice routine in all the best ways! The ability to organize playlists and practice items allows me to leverage my practice time. The improvements and mastery features then further help me figure out what really needs my attention. My biggest success with Modacity was in March/February 2018. I was preparing to go on tour with a bluegrass group playing bass and singing harmony (with a little lead thrown in there), and I had 20+ songs to memorize. It was a truly daunting challenge, and I procrastinated. About 2 weeks from the departure date, I finally decided that it was time to learn these tunes. Using the playlist feature, it helped me see all of what I needed to do, and the mastery feature let me see what needed work. With about 1.5-2 hours of practice a day and some interleaving strategies, I solidly memorized those songs. I didn’t even have to worry about memory lapse on the tour! Using Modacity as a tool for effectiveness let me just have fun. Hope it helps others keep pickin’ and grinnin’!
