Simple Complexity

Hello,I would like to say that the creators have done an amazing job at making something as complex as D&D as simple as choosing options. This is a great tool if you are starting out and aren’t quite sure about what exactly a character gets from their class/race/background. For example each class gets to pick a certain number of certain skills to be proficient in. When you get to that section the app doesn’t make you worry about skills that do not apply or even what it means to be proficient. Now I know many character creation apps do this but it’s just one example of the types of things this app does to make creating a character fluid. I gave this app 5 stars because even though it’s a pay to use app you certainly get what you pay for. The only things I would like to see changed is to have more of the 5e content (specifically UA) and being able to select a template for customization sections. I wanted to make a Raven Queen warlock and saw it wasn’t listed as a sub class. So naturally I went to custom, but found it a little tedious to lookup the information needed to be able to essentially just make a custom subclass. All in all I’m very pleased with the user friendly aspect of this app and think it’s a great choice for beginners and veterans alike.

It is a challenge that we plan on continuing to tackle, update by update. As far as customization goes, we are expanding our custom section and we really like the potential it brings to the future of the app. With our latest edition (equipment -> weapons/armor/items) and spells in on deck, we are slowly rolling out new ways to add things to the app that may not be hard coded. We do plan on adding more content that is readily available in the app (eberron and things like unearthed arcana (this being a bit more challenging because it is still technically "test" material)). In any case, I think you bring up an interesting point in maybe being able to download/import premade content in the custom creator. It is something that we really want to start looking into, the idea of being able to interact with the app from other sources (dm app/other players). Thanks again and we hope to live up to your glowing praise as we continue to update the app! Dont hesitate to reach out via social media/email if you have any other suggestions/comments

Free Version Not Worth It

Limited to 2 characters AND export is a premium feature. If PDF export was free I would consider paying for pro, as strange as that may sound. Instead, I just get the impression that the developers are primarily interested in squeezing as much money as they can out of their users. Sure it's nice that there doesn't seem to be a limit on the number of custom entries you can put in the compendium, but that doesn't do much good if there are only 2 character slots to work with. If there was a character limit but a way to export a sheet without paying for pro, that would telegraph that the devs are trying to make the app functional for free users. The main functionally of a digital character sheet (IMO) is the ability to make quick changes and then be able to undo them easily. That functionality is worth paying for, but not if I feel like I'm being forced into doing it. (As an aside, I don't know what the demographics of the dev team or their userbase are, but I have to tell you, Discord is not nearly as universal as you seem to think it is. Promising "additional content" and only actually having it accessible to those with a Discord login of all things is a frankly baffling decision. Not to mention that it's a horrible place to actually store anything long term... I personally don't have any problem with having to manually input what I want, but this system seems like a huge issue to me)

Hello and thank you for taking the time to leave an in depth review. While I disagree with most of your review, I would like to share my thoughts. A “free” product is always worth it. Because it’s free. You didn’t have to pay for it. Our free version allows you to create two characters, with all the options you may need, level up, and use all the automations you may need inside a game using the app. When you create a product that you are going to sell, especially a freeium model app, you have to decide where to draw the line. The idea is obviously to have people upgrade to pro or I wouldn’t be a good business. The free version is supposed to give you a taste of how the app works and flows and I believe that the features available give you that ability. Most people play one character at a time and that is all they would need to use while playing. If you are wanting to experiment, that is a different sort of user. It is true that I chose to make the free app completely incapaulated inside app. All the things that you need to play are inside the app. If I truly wanted to bleed money I would make a subscription and that is how much people in the industry do it. But because this particular app doesn’t require a monthly maintenance fee, I didn’t do that. I wish you luck in finding something that lives up to your standards and hope you find a product that is “worth” it

I thoroughly enjoy this app and it is infinitely better than most other apps regarding user friendly UI. It truly caters properly towards new players who have too much confusion about creating a character and what things they can/should choose about characters. I am personally an experienced D&D player so I love this app and commend the creators for their success. However, I noticed a few possible fixes. First off, I think it would be consistent with the ideals of the Main Sheet if Dragonborn racial resistances were naturally added to the resistances container. I noticed this minor detail when creating a white Dragonborn, but did not see a Cold resistance, of which I simply added one, but a newer player may easily gloss over this and never remember it. Also, I believe Dragonborn breath attacks should be moved from the Features section, or at least added, to the equipment section alongside the weapons. However, that seems a little strange, so maybe even consider creating a Combat section and adding weapons, their attacks, and any sort of possible racial features such as breath attacks, bite attacks, or specialized unarmed strikes depending on the player chosen race

Hello Teknomansir, Thank you for the in depth review! I will try to explain a bit of what I think regarding your points below:1. Resistances : Absolutely agree and something that is easily fixed. One thing that PrismScroll sometimes struggles with is making sure that the content (things you create in the compendium) have the proper "special effects" (the magic juice that makes all the cool automations happen in the app) added to them when we add cool new UI elements to the sheet (in this case the Resistances/Immunities/Vulnerabilities section). In some cases, the cool new UI gets released before the special effects are updated and while those new UI elements can be updated manually, there are no special effects to initially populate them because the content is a step behind. Luckily, we have a great community they points things out for me so I fix them as they get noticed. So thanks for the call out!2. So this is something that has been on my mind recent and I dont know if have a clear idea of what I want to do yet. So the features page is where all the magic happens for feature special effects but the speed of which you can navigate those may not be as fast as you would like because its in dropdown menus. Since we are dealing with the real estate of a phone screen, the challenge is really there to try to show the most information using the space that you have. I think a combat or action page would be an interesting idea. I think another thing I want to do is really play test a "condensed page" and sorta something that I am testing with the chat bot. Essentially a hub of the most common actions you would take in a D&D game all on one screen (maybe with a single direction scroll). Definitely a challenge but something that I am thinking about. In the mean time, you can create a custom weapon for your Dragon breath if you wanted and then added it to your "weapons" equipment sheet to get that rolling functionality that you would want. Or technically I guess you could create a spell too. There a number of work arounds but obviously it would be nice to have a "right way to do it" rather than a work around so thank you for the thoughts. Hope that gives you a little insight into behind of scenes of the PrismScroll Operation/Thought process and look forward to hearing any other ideas from ya!

I’ve been playing 5e for about 2 years and I’ve never needed another tool. The app is clean and concise, is constantly being updated to keep up with new WoTC releases, and it’s functionality is fantastic. For the casual player who dabbles in home brew, the ability to plug items into your sheets is simple and comprehensive. The character builder is vast and accurate, as well as convenient. I’ve made dozens of characters, NPCs, specialty items, and even monsters on here and they’re all easily accessible, customizable, and simple to browse and interact with. I’m starting a campaign as a dm online and I’ve recommended all my players use this app for their character sheet instead of the websites integrated character creator. All in all it’s a well designed and well maintained app made by a stellar part of the community who understands what the player wants and how to give it to them in the most convenient and consistent way possible. And for times that you’ve got specific requests or recommendations, their discord is very active and the developer often does livestream Q&As to help further develop the app and keep in touch with the community.

Requires iOS 15 or later. If you're on iOS 13 or 14, you'll stay on 10.0.6. NEW: EDITION SETTINGS "Compendium Visibility" is now Edition Settings — the single place you choose which edition of content you see. Pick All, 2014, or 2024, and the whole app follows: compendium, character creation, level-ups, and your sheets. Source Books is still there in a collapsible section. 2024 content is also recognized properly now. It's identified from the book itself instead of a fixed list, so newer releases are filtered without waiting on an app update. NEW: HIDE CONTENT BY TAG Hiding by book wasn't fine-grained enough, so you can now hide by tag too. Hidden tags get their own list with switches, so bringing something back is one tap — plus dedicated Quick Hide switches for Homebrew and Unearthed Arcana. NEW: PER-CHARACTER CONTENT Character creation now opens with a content step: 2014, 2024, All, or a custom mix. Your choice is saved to that character and follows them into pick-lists, level-up spell lists, and their sheet — so a 2014 character stays 2014 even if the rest of your app doesn't. Existing characters are untouched. If you've already locked the app to one edition, creation skips this step.
