CaptionMate 17+

Latet deafened, I have good speech, but zero hearing. I have been looking for a means to use a telephone, and I’ve tried a couple of providers for landlines and a couple of different apps for my cell. I downloaded CaptionMate several months ago and find it works remarkably well, when it works properly. Every so often, the program glitches, and I cannot get to the CaptionMate calling screen. After a couple of attempts, the problem seems to sort itself out, and it is not really very frequent. Overall, this is the best captioning app I have found after several attempts and multiple discussions with other users. The accuracy is quite good, and transcriptions are saved to your phone if you want, including both sides of the conversation.

Captionmate is fantastic! I’ve lost 60% of my hearing and wear hearing aids, but my loss is in speech tones and it’s extremely difficult to understand conversations over the phone when I can’t see the person talking. Captionmate translates in real time and even on calls with multiple people I can keep up with conversations. It’s been a welcome relief at work and has allowed me to handle things I would have normally asked someone else to handle because I was afraid I wouldn’t understand the caller. So thankful for this app!

I discovered this app while searching for a captioning help for my video meetings for work when my employer sent us all to work from home. This app is awesome for phone calls and it’s fast unlike the delay from a live captioner. For video meetings that involve group discussions with users using computer’s internal mics instead of a headset mic o we it does have a little problem with accuracy but still better than a live captioner who may not be able to keep up. The con to this app vs live captioner is that will not provide interpretation on other noises or emotions to the voice such as people laughing or background noises etc.
