This was the first big adventure game I played as a kid. I still remember getting Final Fantasy 2 for the SNES on release day. I have such fond memories of playing this game. So far this game is bringing back some really good memories. The graphics are crisp and a little cleaner than I remember, but I do welcome the changes. The upgraded audio is fantastic. I do wish there was an option to use the original 16-but audio as well, maybe in a future patch. I also enjoy the auto battle with faster speed for some the generic random battles, and no mods to turn off random battles. My only real gripe is the same with any console game on mobile, I am not a fan of touch screen. I play this at random various times (like at work) so using a controller is pretty much a no-go anyways. But being able to play this anywhere is being super cool. Can’t wait for FFVI now.
Worst Version of FF4

FF4 is my favorite game of all time, but this release is awful. As a mobile title, it suffers from illegible narrow font and a poor interface. Too much of the screen is filled with the movement ring (tap movement is unusable due to mandatory hidden passages and is unavailable on all ships but the hovercraft) and 4 widely spaced menu buttons. This is a severe downgrade from the now defunct FF5/6 mobile titles that, despite controversial graphic changes, were optimized for streamlined play on mobile. Unlike those releases, this title has issues with the combat screen, with its extremely zoom out making the Evil Wall start halfway across instead of menacingly moving in from offscreen, and bizarre targeting menus which overlay the bottom windows and do not let you see current character HP once you select the cure spell. Game is also substantially easier than the SNES release it is supposedly based on- I easily conquered the game in under 9 hours without a single game over, using items/buying equipment, or grinding levels. A huge disappointment since I wanted a solid mobile FF4 and this is not it- the defunct old mobile FF4 was based on the 3D DS version and was also not optimized for mobile play. QOL improvements (autobattle, character pathing with tap movement, visible minimap, auto equip) were outweighed by awkward gameplay changes and the worst font I have ever seen in a mobile game. I sincerely hope they patch this later to fix the font at the very least, since right now it is a complete waste of money.
This was actually a good game.

Alright, some minor spoilers for gameplay bellow. This game was the introduction to the new (at the time) way Final Fantasy handles real time back and forth battles. If there were issues in the NES version, I never had any playing through it. The whole process can be turned off but I played through it as it was and didn’t mind it after a while. Some battles were pretty hard when you realize you don’t have 2~5 minutes to review over your abilities. These enemies can attack whenever so it does add some urgency. Things I liked were leveling wasn’t too bad and made it easier to play through. Saw a review that said they made it easier, but as a casual player I felt it made it easier to grind if I want to and beat tough bosses I didn’t know would be randomly thrust at me. Am I unhappy that I couldn’t play as the end characters I wanted, probably. But I will not fault this game. As a “pixel remaster” I don’t see it as some definitive edition people say it should be. I never played the FF4 3D version which probably has these things, and maybe even added or changed story beats. The story was also pretty good, but I’ll forgive them that it wasn’t the end all be all standout. This game does great with revitalizing what it should. The game took me even longer to beat than FF3 which is not unexpected. There was a lot of additional content I didn’t expect as well. I’m curious if I missed anything but all in all, great game. Would recommend playing just to experience it if nothing else.
My Favorite Final Fantasy but AWFUL controls
Travelin' Chris
I’m okay with onscreen controls generally, but this is god awful. The graphics are beautiful. It looks like the wonderful PSP port of this game. But why, dear lord, is it so difficult to control? I was disappointed that the version of Final Fantasy games you had in the store was no longer available, so all my save data was lost coming to this version. I created a new AppleID in divorce, but I finally decided I’d buy them (again) just to be presented with a prettier version I can barely play. My character wants to move all over the place. I don’t mind the onscreen text appearance as some do, but… These controls have got to be fixed. Also, why no Spanish translation? 30% of Americans speak Spanish? The sad thing is, I know none of this is going to be addressed. This port has been out for a while. I saw and ignored the bad reviews because I really missed the story and music from this game. Alas, I don’t know if I’ll be able to replay it on my iPhone. My only hope is maybe Apple TV with controller support? Ugh. Why couldn’t this just be a clean direct port of the perfection of the PSP perfect port?
*Minor bugs have been fixed.
