I love having a hard- and soft-copy of notes. I wanted to try the different modes of the device and found the following on the first day of trying it.1) Live streaming to the app works fine. Most strokes were appropriately captured if you hold the pen properly.2) Off-line capture only grabbed about a page’s worth of strokes before it quit capturing. I don’t know if the pen quit capturing or if the transfer of data failed when the app re-connected. This is obviously a problem if you depend on a soft-copy.3) The best way to make sure it reconnects properly for a new session (meaning any time you turn the pen back on) is to force close the app, turn the pen on, then re-open the app. This is obviously a problem if you want to capture quick notes or fleeting ideas.4) The app crashes without any notice as to why. Are error logs captured anywhere? 5) I have a feeling the app content is not being saved in iCloud, which should be the default. If I lose the data because my iOS device dies or it is stolen, I’m out of luck.

YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICES
pwrUs3r
The original app was never great but it worked and I could keep my content locally without using their cloud services. This new 3.0 major update forces you to upload all of your old notes to the cloud. After updating the app, they give you an option to export your old notebooks to an offline format (probably pdf) but that option only comes up once. If you skip that export option (which I did to better understand my options later in the legacy notebook migration flow), you’re basically screwed; you are forced to upload all your content to their cloud. If you don’t upload your content to their cloud, they lock you out of YOUR notebooks.IF YOU DON’T USE THEIR CLOUD SERVICE, YOU CANNOT ACCESS YOUR NOTEBOOKS.In summary:- It costs over $200 USD for their criminally mediocre “smart” pen- NO OFFLINE OPTION: In order to use Moleskin’s “smart” notebook system, you are forced to upload your content to their cloud services.- This is an egregious, user-hostile change to this moleskin “smart” ecosystem.I’ll admit the physical Moleskin notebooks are wonderful. Great products. But the “smart”/digital side of the ecosystem is a scam. We, the users are now the product. They’re going to milk us for our data and we’ll inevitably find out about a massive data breach at some point.Do yourself a favor and avoid Moleskin’s “smart” products. I feel anything but smart for getting so invested in their garbage.

Hi pwrUs3r, thank you for sharing your thoughts. We understand your concerns about cloud sync and local access to your notebooks. The move to cloud sync was introduced to keep notes securely backed up and available across devices, while improving reliability and recovery options. That said, we also understand that some users prefer a fully local workflow and more control over offline storage. We want to reassure you that we do not sell user data, and privacy is a core part of how we design the service. We’re already working on bringing back the possibility to keep notebooks locally on device memory for users who prefer that approach, even with the trade-offs that local-only storage can involve. We appreciate this kind of direct feedback because it helps us shape the next updates and prioritize the features that matter most to long-time users. If you’d like to discuss your case directly or share more feedback, please contact us through the app Settings > Contact us or by email at team@moleskineeveryday.com. Thanks.
Frustrating tool and little support
hartzhead
This is really meant for non-Windows users because there is not an option to be able to use this with windows. So now I have to use my little tiny phone to see what notes I wrote. But that is only when it works. My pen has not synced with my app for the last week and so it’s pointless to even have this tool. It’s also really frustrating because the notes do not always get recognized by the app. You have to have the app open and with you for it to have a digital version created. I have had to go back and rewrite my notes on top of what’s already there in order to make sure it gets digitized. There is almost no troubleshooting information or knowledge base.

Dear Hartzhead,Thank you for your feedback. The app has been specifically designed to run on mobile devices and tablets, and it is not compatible with Windows or desktop PCs. It’s a companion app for use on the go, and we understand that this may not suit all workflows. That said, we are currently working on the launch of a completely redesigned version of the app which will bring a much smoother and more reliable experience across supported devices. We truly appreciate your patience and feedback as it helps us improve. Thank you.
Not worth the price point if paying retail for the hardware.
EarthScapeArchitect
The smart pen itself is made by another company Neo lab. My pen does not have any firmware revisions available for it. It’s still on revision one.Meaning that they have not worked on the software for the pen for a considerable amount of time and have never released software updates for the firmware of the pen.My pen / the software has issues with digitalization, and will sometimes draw random pen strokes. It also has had trouble registering pen strokes towards the top of the page. The app user interface is confusing and hard to navigate. It feels like the software hardware combo was rushed to market before working out the bugs. The pen itself is a good weight but feels like it might become uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time.Would be nice if there was an open source component to the software so independent developers could work out some of the bugs and speed up the revision cycle.
