How Rubber Bridge works
Players bid in an auction to set the contract, trump suit, or No Trump. After the opening lead, dummy is revealed and declarer plays both hands.
Score points for making the contract, or award undertrick penalties to the defenders if the contract fails. A rubber is won when a partnership wins two games; each game is won at 100 contract points.
After trying some other apps, this one has few of the errors of other apps. Main problem is not bidding higher than needed to make the game (when slam doesn’t appear to be an option). I like that skill level is an option (good for beginners and all levels?). I’m playing again after learning and playing a lot as a teen, playing a bit in my 30’s, and then a dearth of people in subsequent years who knew how to play. Great opportunity to relearn defense. I like to access the hints which may or may not validate my potential choice but sometimes show me reasoning I hadn’t considered. Really miss the human element, i.e.meaning how quickly one plays or one pauses and, in duplicate play, getting to ask a team about their reasoning. (In my early 70’s now.) I’ll update after I play this app more.Been playing a lot over the last week.. a few things I’ve noticed:- The board layout needs to be reworked. It is way to easy to hit Pass instead of Bid, wiping out the potential bid. Happens often enough that it has become my major pet peeve!- Partner often unnecessarily plays a good card on top of other partner’s play, usually resulting in loosing a potential trick and messing up The Plan..- Not a normal variety of good/bad hands dealt. I have played several games in a row without my partner and I getting a bidable one. Great defense practice BUT… so bad I’ve rebooted my iPad hoping to get a new practice. Overall, I suspect the game tends to favor 1 bids and game. Very few partial hands that have to be accumulated to win.+ Love the hints feature. + After looking up hints on internet, I realize there have been some major changes in last couple of decades, like the “weak 2 opener”. More relearning to occur!+ Really like the option to change the difficulty!Think this is still the best app I’ve played..

This was my issue also. The AI partners bidding is all over the place. In one hand I had 6 of the suit I was bidding, I was up to 2 in that suit and the AI jumped to 4NT. There hadn’t been any NT bid prior and to go to 4 when it didn’t even have the cards to back that call. In another situation, it called 3 in a suit and it only had what would be, 3 cards in that suit. They were high cards, but by itself without other backers in the off suits, we obviously lost the hand. Because as it turned out, I didn’t have any in that suit and not much in high cards. There’s also times when it will trump a trick I already had. Now I could understand if it was Trump tight, but every time this happens, it’s not. It’s over Trumped my Trump when no need or taken a trick I already had, which in turn cost us the game. BUT it is a fun game, that unfortunately not many people are playing it there would be more choices in the App Store. Out of all the choices, this is by far the best. But still needs adjusting. Please teach the AI partner how to bid! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. I’mSo sick of it bidding 3 of something and not having even enough hpc to be able to bid in the first place. I just had 7 of a suit and I got the bid up to 3 of that suit; doesn’t the stupid AI partner over bid me and then not have even remotely close to get it and I no longer had much in the suit it picked, because of having 7 of the suit I was bidding. The AI partners bidding is the number one biggest issue with this app. It’s like every time, it’s playing for the first time. Very annoying!
I find the bidding erratic
Easy to fix
In one instance my partner jumped from 2NT to 4NT when he could have easily bid 3NT. Who does that? 3NT is game and there is no reason to go to 4NT unless he is inviting a slam. But our cards were just not there for a slam. And of course we could not even make the 10 tricks. 3NT was by far the better call. We would have completed our contract and had a game under our belt. In other instances my partner would not go up to bid a game call and stop short at 3 hearts or 2 NT when all indications were that we could bid higher. And we made the extra trick in each case.A little frustrating.

App seems geared to give E/W the better hands. The defensive play is absolutely horrible. HORRIBLE!!! Leads are rarely returned—good tricks in NT aren’t taken and what is lead sets up tricks for E/W. Opening two bids should be at least 20 points minimum—played a hand that had 11 points that opened 2H with three card suit. Disgraceful. Opening bids for North are sometimes very light in point value with only a 2-3 card suit—even in hearts/spades. I play the hard version and if this is your example of hard, I’d expect better bidding/defense. I still play because I enjoy the challenge of the game, but this app could and should be drastically improved. At the very least, post what variations to standard bridge you use—i.e. short club openings; short point opening two bids; five card major suits to open; return your partner’s lead; take your good tricks in NT—ALL of the above and MORE!!! The recent update is awful. Absolutely hate the different colored suits.
Thank you for playing Classic Bridge! Here's what's new in this update:
- Dummy layout: we've added an option to use the previous landscape layout for the East/West dummy.
- Bid panel: we've added an option to view the bid panel and bid history for the current hand even after the hand has ended.
- Bug fix: we've updated the return lead logic to cover more scenarios for the AI players.
- Bug fix: we've corrected the suit icon color in the bid panel for players using four-color suits.
