The game of blob domination.
Dominate the world. One blob at a time.
World domination isn't a very fashionable ambition these days, but that doesn't mean you can't pretend. Strategery is a battle between your pegs and the green, orange, blue, and red blobs that dare to stand in your way.
It's also a little bit of App Store history. Strategery first launched in 2008, back when the App Store was barely a few months old. Macworld named it the Best Strategy Game of 2009. Slate called it their latest iPhone gaming habit. Daring Fireball said the gameplay had a great feel. And a Macworld reviewer named Lex Friedman wrote that there was no game he played on his iPhone more.
That reviewer now makes Strategery. Life is funny.
HOW IT'S PLAYED
The world is made of blobs. Every blob holds pegs — your pegs, ideally. Pick a blob you own, point at a neighboring blob you don't, and roll. More pegs, better odds. Win the roll and the blob changes color. Lose it and, well, you still have your other blobs.
Keep going until the whole map is your color and everyone else is looking for the rematch button.
Your turn, your dice, your questionable decisions
Bigger stacks of pegs win more rolls. Usually.
Every blob you hold earns you more pegs
Last color standing dominates the world. Politely.
THREE WAYS TO CONQUER
Solo: Play against the computer. It has no friends, no feelings, and no plans this evening. It will happily lose to you all night. (Or not. You choose how clever it gets to be.)
Online: Play against your friends. Take turns from wherever you are. A push notification lets you know when it's your move, or when someone has done something regrettable to your blobs.
Pass and play: One phone, one couch, several rivals. Hand it over, let them try, and try not to gloat.
CLASSIC OR CHAOS
Classic is the game you remember: dice, blobs, and your own poor judgment. Chaos adds starred blobs. Capture one and the wheel spins. Your conquest has consequences.
Either way, you pick how much world there is to dominate.
A WAR WITH NO CASUALTIES
Blobs don't bleed. Pegs don't feel pain. Nothing explodes, nobody gets hurt, and the only thing that ever gets conquered is a colorful shape on a map. Somebody's pride may be wounded when you take their last blob, but that's between the two of you.
For iPhone and iPad. Contains no violence, several dice, a healthy number of blobs, and a reasonable amount of whimsy.
Strategery was originally designed by Sumul Shah, Courtland Idstrom, and Peter Ju. This version comes from Lex Friedman, who is one person and would be delighted by a rating or review.
It's not strategy. It's Strategery.
I’ve been playing this game for several years. It’s a wonderful simplistic game that passes the time nicely… In the higher levels of play, it does require some real strategy. The one complaint I have is this. In the smaller maps, competition AI gets a little illogical, broken down and downright impossible for most battle scenarios. The AI competitors can beat you with a 2 vs 3 Army attack many many times and you’re never able to beat them when you have 2 armies vs their 3. Also, often times the three AI armies will gang up on you or ignore obvious strategic advantages by attacking either empty spaces or other AI colors. It’s a glitch and they probably will never fix it but it’s just something that I’ve noticed and recorded on video several times. If the developers are willing to discuss this with me I’d be happy to share my evidence. Again, otherwise this is a really fun game and super simple that has survived the many upgrades of iPhone to still be a part of my game catalog!
New update is now great

I’ve had this game for 15 years or so and loved it. When this update randomly happened one day, I hated it and left a one star review because it took away the gameplay mechanics I used. I’m changing it to 4 stars because after some updates, it’s back to great again. The manual reinforcement placement setting with the new “do it for me” button once I don’t care where the extras go is the best thing that has ever happened to the game. The AI behavior is different now but it’s still fun. I’ve had some of the best matches ever since the update a few days ago. The newest one lets me put it mostly back to the way it used to be visually also. I save that last star because I wish it kept better statistics (like records of all colors in each difficulty, and casualty reports after the match for your blobs. The new country names add flavor and it would be interesting to know how many of my subjects I sent to die. It also uses a ton of battery now and my phone gets a bit hot, which never happened on the old one. But the game is more fun than ever and I’m glad it’s being updated.I also just figured out that the old game is still there. Hold the Strategery logo on the main menu and count to like 8. Even my old stats are still in it.
Ignore the complaints from newbies

Don’t believe the comments about the levels being all about “ridiculously impossible dice rolls” - that was clearly from a person who tried jumping to the “brutal” level before he had a grasp of the subtleties of the game. I only play in the “brutal” level and it is a true challenge (I win 60-70%), but you have to know what you’re doing. I suggest mastering each level before moving up - and disregarding comments of ignorance. It took about 80 hours to work up to “brutal” for me, and has kept my interest for 7 or 8 years now.I do agree, however, about having to occasionally tap many times to eliminate the last one or two pieces (which is usually the result of poor planning on the player’s part, but I accept it as a kind of ‘punishment’ for not getting the end moves just right, driving my challenge right up to the last move), and that there could be an easy fix, but I find it hysterical that the complaint is coming from a screen name with “...Real Zen...” in it.I play this game every time I have to wait for something (Dr’s. offices, on long flights, etc.) and it is a perfect challenge for me.I highly recommend it.November 2020 Update:This game doesn’t appear to be compatible with IOS 14 - it just won’t open since I “upgraded” my IOS
New update is terrible

Update: why is the original version of the game only available via a hidden Easter egg found by tap and holding on the “Strategery” logo for five seconds on the main app screen? Obviously, many players want the option to play the original, so why not just give them an obvious option to do so? Original: Been playing this game for over a decade and suddenly it has a new user interface (UI), new colors, new rules, new everything. The new UI is terrible - muddy colors and unclear board and hard to follow animations. The new developer completely got rid of the old, clean and crisp views in favor of some muddled mess. Please give us the option to play the original version with the original rules and the original UI. New options are fine and it’s great that someone is keeping the game working on newer iOS versions, but why get rid of everything that made the game the game in an update? If the new developer wanted to release a new game, why not release “Strategery 2” vs ruining this great app?!
Occasionally, some games with large maps could get stuck in a stalemate, when you were down to two countries and one chokepoint. This update ensures no such stalemates ever occur anymore. You deserve better. This is it.
Another update saves you a tap, by making it a touch (haha) easier to start a game as you preview maps. Just tap on your color blob to select the map.
This update also vastly improves VoiceOver, which was already pretty good!
