I joined Foto in its first beta stages and did some of the basic testing/feedback. Even with (very) few kinks to work out, the Foto app has always been a quiet, pleasant ride. You’re here to share and enjoy photos. You can comment, like, make a mini portfolio (a + option), share, find new people to follow, and see who you follow in the timeline without fighting an algorithm that stole your info and thinks it knows what you want to see. It’s based on when people actually post things. It’s only who you follow. That might sound basic to some, but it’s literally a paradise in comparison to other apps these days. It’s everything I could want as a photographer, and I’ve enjoyed finding so many more people to connect with than I have in years. Additionally, even with their more limited staff, they have been updating with new features and fixing bugs in a timely and open way. They are very good with communication. You know what’s coming before it changes on you, and they welcome feedback. If you’re a photographer or artist missing what other apps used to be, or even someone new to posting your creations. Try Foto. Let the ease of it wash over you. Enjoy finding people’s work and sharing your own without all the noise. You will feel better. You will feel joy again.

I’m floored by this app right now. Michael and team have created an incredible base to build off of and you can tell by their philosophy that this is heading in the right direction. A direction focused on photography and community. As a photographer with multiple interests I’m excited for the upcoming paid portfolio feature so I can organize my wedding and nature photography on one page without having to create multiple accounts. I’m happy to pay for features like this. Those who don’t need such features can still enjoy the app freely and post without trouble. I think this will be a sustainable method to monetize without having to add ads and such. Meta has folks paying just so your posts can get engagement. Being seen should be standard, not a feature. With every other post on IG being an ad or some rage bait, I’m more than happy to spend my time on the Foto App. Fingers crossed that one day I can delete IG without hesitation. Here’s to finding a new home for photography!

Really enjoy this app so far. I don’t see it as a replacement for any other app but rather its own unique opportunity for sharing photography and art. I look forward to seeing what additional features will be added in the future but for now I very much like the feel and functionality. The prioritizing of still photos with no option for video is absolutely a positive thing and resolution to what is one of mine and many others main complaints about other media sharing apps. This is excellent for those that want to view and support inspiring photography. The overall design is simple and presents work in a way that is easy to view and connect with. I rarely download new apps but I’ve been waiting for this one and I’m not disappointed. I have no doubt that with the continued development and expanding user base, this will be a very successful and appreciated application.

Updating with new portfolio feature release. Old review:Wished there were more photography centric features such as: searching by specific camera and lenses, optional fields in post for info (like location, camera, lens, iso, fstop, etc), and new one:on your profile page it would be amazing to be able to arrange your photos manually, not just chronologically, so it can be curated in a true portfolio style to tell a story. I know you can just post them in order but sometimes a photo posted later makes sense in a previous series when revisited.New:^ above still holds true. Portfolios feature fulfills some of this, but not in an efficient way. Hope this makes sense: think of regular posts as raws/negatives flagged because they’re good enough for printing. Portfolios is where I’d organize and print said photos into a book to tell a story. I may use the same photo in multiple portfolios if it fits, which in the current workflow would waste lots of server space. When creating a new portfolio, there should be 2 options: 1) add a previous post (as in, print one of the previously flagged negatives); 2) add a new post (as in, flag a new negative/raw and print it). When doing (2), you’d essentially be creating a new post within the existing ‘add post’ workflow and adding it to the portfolio automatically. This also allows us to optionally caption individual photos within a portfolio appropriately, since I primarily use it to note camera, lens, place, and date taken.
