mdtAPE – meditation & hrv
monkey mind, measured.
Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
a week to breathe: seven days of coherent breathing for world mental health day. on the 10th, one breath the whole world takes together. free, on-device.
your monkey mind has met its match.
mdtAPE is a meditation tracker that shows you whether your practice is actually working — by measuring Heart Rate Variability (HRV), the clearest biometric signal your nervous system produces.
every session, mdtAPE reads your HRV before and after you meditate. over time, you see the trend. the monkey settles. the numbers move. trust the process, track the progress.
WHAT YOU GET
- HRV tracking — before and after every session, linked to your Apple Watch via Apple Health
- session score — a 0–100 quality rating based on completion, HRV delta, and heart rate response
- weekly HRV insight — the monkey's weekly report: rising, stable, dipped, or recovering
- wellness trend score — 30-day vs prior-30-day HRV comparison, at a glance
- mindstate progression — 8 ranks from tree climber to eternal jungle sage, unlocked by meditation minutes
- guided meditations — body scan, breath awareness, loving kindness, sleep wind-down
- breath work — box breathing, 4-7-8, coherent breathing, deep relaxation
- ape mode — 25 sessions built for the trader mindset: HRV reset, red day decompression, steady state, the long game, and more
- affirmations — morning confidence, resilience, self-compassion
- ape coach — an AI coach powered by Claude that reads your meditation history, streak, and HRV trend before responding. one free message per day
- gratitude companion — daily reflection with an AI that reads your recent entries and helps you go deeper
- 140-day heatmap — see your full practice history at a glance
- streak tracking — consistency is the practice
- session journal — optional notes after every sit
- daily reminder — a gentle nudge at the same time every day
THE SCIENCE
HRV — the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats — reflects how well your autonomic nervous system adapts to stress and recovery. higher HRV correlates with better resilience, sleep quality, and emotional regulation.
research shows mindfulness meditation can lift parasympathetic activity and HRV over time. mdtAPE makes that progress visible, session by session.
you stopped wondering whether meditation works. now you can see it.
THE APE
the name is two things at once.
in Buddhist tradition, the "monkey mind" describes the restless, chattering mental state that meditation is meant to quiet. every session you sit with that monkey. eventually, it settles.
in internet culture, apes hold the line. apes together calm.
mdtAPE is for both: the meditator who wants science, and the ape who wants proof.
SILVERBACK
unlock the full ape mode library, unlimited ape coach messages, and the gratitude companion without daily limits.

the ape coach is three conversations now. a chip row at the top — coach,
individuation, the felt — each with its own thread, its own memory, its own
way of talking. the individuation coach works the ten-day arc and asks more
than it concludes; it hands the material back to you rather than solving it.
the felt coach is for the mind of the player: tilt and what fires it, the
decision after the bad beat, the stop-loss that held or didn't. it never
talks about the cards. and if what you raise is money you can't afford to
lose, it doesn't offer you a track — it points you at a person.
all three have a paperclip by the message box. tap it, pick a sit, and that
evening goes into the chat as your own message: the track, the minutes, the
hrv movement, the note you wrote afterwards. pointing at one evening is a
different question from asking how the month went.
the ten poker sessions stopped introducing themselves. each one used to open
with a voice telling you what the practice was and how long it takes — both
already printed on the card you tapped. every track now opens on its first
instruction. one caution survived on purpose. the cards show the shorter
times.
the rank-up moment lost its confetti ape and got light instead: slow motes in
your rank's own colours, rising past the medallion and vanishing behind it.
and the medallion is a circle on every surface now, home included, so one rank
stops looking like two different objects.
smaller things:
- both celebration screens fit an iphone se again, and scroll at large text
sizes.
- a locked coach chip tells voiceover that it's locked — once, instead of
announcing itself twice and never as locked.
4.2.524 Sep 3
the felt is its own tier now. ten practices for the mental game: downswings, stake drops, tilt, and knowing when to stop. it sits above silverback and keeps everything silverback already gives you.
your companion moves again. the ape beside the coach had gone completely still while it thought. it breathes now, the rings around it are actually visible, and the hearts at the end of a session stay off its face.
library and learn line up. both headers sit at the same height, in english and german, however long the text under them runs.
4.2.517 Aug 13
individuation — ten days with jung.
there is a genre of post that puts carl jung's name on a method for making wishes come true: name the wish, say it in the present tense, picture it two minutes a morning. it is a good post. it is not jung.
so we kept the container and threw out the engine. ten days, two minutes a morning, the promise that awkwardness is progress — filled with the actual work.
eleven new sessions, meant in order: (the ten titles + taglines)
plus "the two minutes", a short daily practice you keep afterwards. all eleven in english and german.
this is not manifestation. nothing here bends circumstances or attracts outcomes. what it does is remove a contradiction — it stops one part of you arguing with another in a language you never learned to hear.
shadow work is not for a moment of crisis. the category asks before it begins, and says plainly who should skip it. i am not a doctor.

apes breathe together
every other meditation app is solo-only. from this build, mdtAPE isn't: pick a breath, share one link, and every ape who taps it counts down to the same moment — then every phone starts the same exercise at the same instant. orbs rising together, across any distance.
no account, no feed, no counters. the invite is a time and a breath, nothing else. someone taps the link late? they slip in on the next shared inhale. the link even works for friends without the app — it shows them the invite and where to get mdtAPE.
find it on home: "breathe together". invite a friend. two orbs, one breath.
4.2.489 Jul 21
deutsch ist live
• the whole app now speaks german — a german iphone gets it out of the box, and an explicit language choice in settings always wins
• all 43 tracks also exist in german, spoken by a warm older voice — they download on first play, then live on your device
• titles display in german where it fits — morning bell stays morning bell
• and the last english word on the german home screen is gone: the start orb now says "beginnen". hodl stays hodl.
4.2.485 Jul 20
deutsch ist live
• the whole app now speaks german — a german iphone gets it out of the box, and an explicit language choice always wins
• all 43 tracks also exist in german, spoken by a warm older voice — they download on first play, then live on your device
• interval bells for silent sits: halfway, every 5 or every 10 minutes
• a phone call now pauses your sit cleanly — and resumes where you were
• finished sessions can't get lost anymore, even if the app closes on the summary screen
• first-play downloads show real progress, with a "start in silence instead" escape hatch
• voiceover, dynamic type and reduce motion are respected now
• light mode: readable everywhere
4.2.484 Jul 19
the whole catalog now speaks german. 43 tracks — every guided session, every affirmation, every healing sit, all of ape mode — spoken by a warm older voice, du-form, with the same generous silences as the english originals.
also: the app got about 4× lighter. tracks now download the first time you play them (a few MB, once) and then live on your device. the core guides and all breathwork work offline from the first minute — airplane mode included.
small fixes: your session history now counts every sit, no matter which screen you started it from.
apes together strong.
4.2.474 Jul 13
the breath orb comes alive.
the session player is rebuilt from the ground up. the orb breathes with you in frosted glass, the phone breathes in your hand — a soft haptic swell on every inhale and release — and holding a steady rhythm blooms a quiet reward around the ring. scrubbing has a texture now. nothing shouts. it just breathes.
sit longer, same words.
most short sits now carry a second, longer version — same voice, same words, the quiet stretched out. a 3-minute sit becomes ~5–6, a 5-minute one ~8–9. nothing new is spoken; there's just more silence to rest in. tap the little hourglass on a library card. free, all tracks.
the ape breathes.
the companion that opens and closes onboarding isn't a still picture anymore — the chest fills and settles, the head drifts on its own slow rhythm, with a held pause at the top and bottom of each breath. and your very first sit starts gently now: a calm beat to settle before the audio begins.
a daily-habits reminder.
a third gentle nudge sits alongside meditation and gratitude — one for keeping your habit chain alive. flip it on and it's scheduled right then; editing the time is optional. small reps. big ape.
a quieter first run.
no location ask, no "silence everything?" modal in the opening breaths. the app meets you calm, not with a stack of dialogs to agree to.
smooth brain. still mind. apes together strong.
i am not a doctor.
4.2.465 Jul 8
a friend tested the app and told us the truth: too much, too soon. this build fixes the front door.
• your first sit starts right inside onboarding — "begin · 5 min". or "later", no pressure.
• notifications only ask after a session you actually finished. never cold, never twice.
• ape coach says hi first — after your first sit it opens the conversation, naming the session you just did. a quiet dot on its tile until you look.
• home went on a diet: the stats stack (hrv trend, session reel, wellness, "what works") moved into a one-tap insights view. the start screen leads with the sit again.
• the library learns: a "for you" shelf ranked from what you actually play — history, favorites, time of day. on-device, no account, no ml.
• fixed: the breathing orb had lost its glass edge and read as a blur. it's glass again.
4.2.447 Jul 6
the session players are rebuilt from the breath up — steadier underneath, and now they can be felt.
— the phone breathes in your hand. on a silent sit, a gentle swell rises with each inhale and releases with each exhale, on the same curve the orb moves on.
— the breathing orb is alive. every breathwork session now runs on a living, light-bending sphere that fills and empties with your breath and shimmers through the holds.
— feel your way through a guided track. drag the waveform and the texture shifts under your thumb — smooth over the silences, grainy over the voice.
— hold the breathing orb, and each phase turn lands as a soft confirm under your finger.
— sessions settle now — a meditation dissolves into its summary instead of cutting to it.
smooth brain. still mind.
4.2.445 Jul 5
a month of nightly builds, rolled into one. the big ones:
your calm on the home screen. a widget family — small, medium, large. your calm score (0–100, read from your hrv), today's minutes, a 7-day trend. tap to begin.
a habit journal. small steps, anchored to what you already do, forgiving when you miss a day. build habits or break them — and your apple watch can check them off for you.
hrv that guides the practice. overnight recovery state, a read on which sessions actually move your numbers, a coherence signal during the sit, percentile context, and a weekly digest.
the voice came home. every guided meditation re-recorded with peter — warmer, more alive. the long sits learned to breathe in and rest out.
more to listen to. the healing category is fully open. learn grew real shelves — alan watts parables, zen stories, children's tales, the gme saga.
a coach that pays attention. ape coach streams its replies now, knows what's actually in the app, and can talk about your watch's hrv.
and the feel of the whole thing. frosted glass throughout, living backgrounds, a reworked start dial with real parallax, full light mode, fresh icons — and badges that breathe, ring, and now catch the light. apple journal syncs both ways.
smoother, faster, steadier all over.
smooth brain. still mind.
4.2.389 Jun 24
a feel pass. everything you tap now presses back — tiles, habit checks, cards, pills — with a soft press and a little weight. checking a habit feels like finishing something. the gratitude and habit cards went glassy, and the tab bar glides between tabs. quieter, lighter, smoother.
4.2.375 Jun 17
the app opens, every time.
we hunted down a launch hang — a small number of cold opens,
usually the very first one right after an update, could get
stuck on the loading screen and sit there. fixed. the app now
paints the first screen first and sorts out the rest in the
background, so a slow connection can't hold the door shut.
also landed recently:
— habit journal. a third journal alongside gratitude and the
coach. one tiny step, an if-then cue, a why, and a forgiving
streak — one missed day never breaks it.
— library and learn now run full-height. status bar tucked
away so the cards get the room.
smooth brain. still mind.
4.2.369 Jun 15
a lot has landed since the relaunch. the big ones:
your HRV, read properly. overnight recovery state, a coherence signal during the session itself, percentile context and a weekly digest. the app learns what actually works for you and picks sessions to match. (needs an Apple Watch. i am not a doctor.)
a coach that knows your numbers. ape coach now reads your real HRV and session history from HealthKit, answers as it thinks instead of leaving you on a blank screen, and drops an insight after each sit.
the healing library. a full new category — heart health, chronic pain, more — with localised tracks and plain-language disclaimers.
learn, with shelves. children's stories, alan watts parables, eastern philosophy — sorted into categories, with search.
find your sit faster. library search, "for you right now" recommendations, and a quick post-session mood check that sharpens them over time.
Apple Watch. start on your wrist and your minutes, streak and level-ups sync back to the phone. breathing haptics in the apple mindfulness style. HRV stored straight from HealthKit.
a calmer surface. living backgrounds you can pick in settings, a frosted-glass player, a gyroscope start dial that floats with the phone, full light / dark / solar mode, and peter's voice across the guided meditations.
plus hundreds of small fixes. apes together strong.
4.2.339 Jun 10
new icon
— the app has a new look. the diamond family has been redesigned. silverback subscribers get four patron-exclusive icons that rotate by time of day: aureate (morning), onyx (daytime), patina (evening), vellum (night). the in-app avatar matches whichever icon you see on your home screen.
healing category
— a new library section built on clinical evidence. "a quiet practice for the heart" is live now — slow-paced cardiac breathing at 6 bpm with Apple Watch biofeedback. eleven more tracks are recording: chronic pain, sleep, burnout, grief, cancer recovery, inflammation, gut health, tinnitus, surgery, addiction recovery, and trauma-sensitive anchoring. evidence-grounded. always alongside your care.
ape mode — silverback only
— ape mode is now silverback-exclusive in the library. free users see a cleaner experience. when you subscribe, the library opens straight to ape mode with a welcome moment.
audio fixes
— three sessions had production loop errors that repeated phrases for minutes at a time. all three are now repaired: body scan for stress relief (three loop sections removed), hold the line (belly phrase loop), and red day reset (garbled section removed, session restored to the library).
ape coach
— fully updated with current app knowledge. faster responses on follow-up messages.
session export
— if the share sheet doesn't open, the CSV is now copied to your clipboard automatically. you always get your data.
apple watch
— the watch face complication now updates whenever you complete a session on the phone, not only when you meditate from the watch.
start dial
— the parallax orb now adapts to how you're holding the phone. grip change? it re-centres itself in a few seconds.
smaller fixes
— breathing ring stops when you pause a session. session controls press down on tap. reminder save confirms with a toast.
4.2.227 Jun 2
new icon
— the app has a new face. free tier users get the updated diamond icon. silverback subscribers get the new patron family (aureate, onyx, patina, vellum) — one per time of day, automatically. the in-app avatar in the home screen header now matches whichever icon you see on your home screen.
healing category
— 12 evidence-based tracks are now visible in the library. one is live today: "a quiet practice for the heart" — cardiac meditation with biofeedback, slow-paced breathing at 6 breaths per minute, guided body scan. 11 more are recording now: chronic pain, healing sleep, burnout recovery, grief, cancer survivorship, inflammation, gut health, tinnitus, post-surgery, addiction recovery, and trauma-sensitive anchoring. each one is designed to sit alongside your medical care, never instead of it.
ape coach
— the coach has been fully briefed on the current app: every session in the library, the healing category, all 30+ ape mode tracks, free vs silverback features, streak milestones, and how everything works. it also responds faster — the static coaching context is now cached so follow-up messages process significantly fewer tokens.
start dial
— the orb now floats more accurately when you hold the phone naturally. swipe arrows are visible from the start and step aside the moment you start swiping.
session improvements
— the breathing ring stops when you pause a session. a "paused" chip appears below the timer.
— tapping stop while already paused no longer accidentally resumes your session when you choose "keep going."
session export
— CSV export now works on iOS 17+.
smaller fixes
— reminder save button shows a spinner and confirms with a toast.
— session history cards respond to tap.
— locked content taps now have haptic feedback.
4.2.218 Jun 1
healing category
— 12 evidence-based tracks are now visible in the library. one is live today: "a quiet practice for the heart" (cardiac, biofeedback). eleven more are recording now — chronic pain, healing sleep, burnout, grief, cancer recovery, inflammation, gut health, tinnitus, surgery, addiction recovery, and trauma-sensitive anchoring. each one is evidence-grounded and designed to sit alongside your medical care, never instead of it.
ape coach
— fully updated. the coach now knows the complete app: every session in the library, all 30+ ape mode tracks, the healing category, free vs silverback features, streak milestones, theatre mode, and everything else. it also loads faster — the static coaching context is now cached by the API so follow-up messages process significantly fewer tokens.
session improvements
— the breathing ring now stops when you pause a session. a small "paused" chip appears below the timer so the state is unmistakeable.
— tapping stop while already paused no longer accidentally resumes your session when you choose "keep going."
— theatre mode hint is now visible (it was painted invisible against its own background).
export
— session CSV export now works reliably on iOS 17+.
home screen icon
— subscribing to silverback now switches your home screen icon immediately, without needing to background and reopen the app.
smaller fixes
— session history cards all give haptic feedback on tap.
— reminder save button shows a spinner and confirms the saved time with a toast.
— learn tab session descriptions no longer overflow on small devices.
4 May 31
start dial
— swipe arrows are now always visible in the orb so you know exactly how to adjust your session length. they step aside the moment you start swiping.
— the parallax effect (orb floating as you tilt the phone) was rebuilt from scratch. no more startup drift. the orb re-centres automatically whenever you shift your grip.
light mode
— toast messages, the silverback plan card, and the library recording banner are now properly visible in light mode.
— the grid is now visible in light mode across all pages.
streaks
— the fire icon is now consistent between the home screen and the streak detail sheet.
4.2.197 May 30
what's new
patron icons for silverback — four time-of-day app icons now rotate automatically with the sun. aureate at dawn, onyx through the day, patina at dusk, vellum at night. the home screen avatar follows along.
gyroscope dial — the start orb responds to how you're holding the phone. a small tilt effect driven by the accelerometer. subtle, but you'll notice it.
session history export — the CSV export button in session history was silently failing on iOS 17. fixed. tap the share icon, get your full session data as a spreadsheet.
share after meditation — the share button on the post-session summary was unresponsive in the first few seconds after finishing. fixed. always tappable now.
animated backgrounds now visible — the MINDSTATE wellness card was fully opaque, hiding the ambient backgrounds behind it. dropped to 28% opacity so the background actually shows through.
"after hours" correctly labeled — it's a late-night wind-down meditation for adults. was incorrectly showing as a children's story. fixed.
4.2.164 May 30
4.2.130 (440) building. Here's what was added:
Two pulsing arrows (← →) sit between the orb edge and the track ring at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions — visually part of the dial, not floating UI chrome
They breathe in sync with the orb's existing pulse animation (opacity 0.20 → 0.55, accent colour)
On first horizontal drag they fade out (500 ms) and the dismissal is written to SharedPreferences — hint never appears again on subsequent launches
No new controllers — reuses _breathController
4.2.130 May 29
What's fixed in 4.2.127:
guided → teal #5BD6A5 (bright vivid mint — unambiguously teal)
breathing → #78B4E8 (sky blue — clearly distinct from green)
affirmations stays amber, healing stays rose (those were already vivid enough)
border opacity raised from 50% → 65% — the border is the primary color signal on a small chip, so a stronger border makes the hue immediately legible
4.2.127 May 28

4.1 May 19
1 — HRV glance card on home (home_view.dart)
Added _getHrvGlanceData() and _buildHrvGlanceCard(). The card sits between the greeting row and the start button, using the already-loaded medModHRV data — no extra network call. Shows the most recent HRV in ms, a trend pill (↑ rising / → stable / ↓ recovering) derived from a 7-day vs prior-7-day average, and taps through to the data section. Hidden for iPhone-only users.
2 — Five "full ape mode" copy moments
Moment Where
Greeting _getGreeting() in home_view.dart — "morning, ape." / "afternoon, ape." / "evening, ape." / "still up?" (after 10pm)
Post-session meditation_summary_view.dart — shows "apes together calm." in beige italic on a completed session, before the standard subtitle
Mindstate unlock newMindstate l10n key changed from "new mindstate" → "the troop welcomes" (feeds BadgeUnlockOverlay without touching the widget)
Streak meditation_minutes_circle.dart — day 1 shows "day 1. the line holds.", all others show "you held the line · N days"
Settings easter egg settings_view.dart footer — "monkey mind, biofeedback. that's mdtAPE." in barely-visible Colors.white12
3 — Fix "recovering ↘"
All three occurrences of 'recovering ↘' in hrv_meditations_diagram.dart replaced with 'recovering'. The down-arrow no longer contradicts the word. Also fixed the locked-state colour in meditation_state_details.dart: red → amber #D4A017, and the text changed from "locked (X / Y min)" to the forward-looking "X / Y min to unlock" / "unlocked · Y min".
4 — Archive tab renamed
navArchive → 'library' (EN) / 'bibliothek' (DE) in both l10n files.
5 — HealthKit priming screen (onboarding screen 7)
_totalPages bumped 6 → 7. New _buildScreen6() screen shows the Apple Health icon, the permission context paragraph (your data stays on device), and a privacy lock line. Fires immediately before the system HealthKit prompt.
6 — Onboarding mindstate pills corrected
_badgeTitles extended from 5 to all 8 real mindstates (adding wise silverback, zen ape ascendant, eternal jungle sage). _localizedBadgeTitles() likewise updated. Badge controller duration bumped to 2200 ms for the longer stagger. The "go ape" screen now matches the app's actual progression.
