Have you ever wondered what a carillon actually is? For the first time, auXync lets you see that action in real time. A video stream of the musician(s) performing inside a tower carillon is sent directly to your GPS‑enabled mobile device, with the video synchronised precisely to the sound of the bells you hear, and also projected into the space around you through augmented reality (AR) technology.
Carillons are keyboard instruments with 23 or more tuned bronze bells, and in almost all cases the musician who performs on them is located high up in a tower and invisible to the public. This app changes that, bringing a view of the musicians directly to your device, in real time.
Conceived, designed and tested in Canberra, the auXync app was launched at the 2026 Canberra International Music Festival as part of the "Bell Plains" National Carillon concert featuring Thomas Laue (carillon) and Dylan Slater (guitar).
Using a combination of your device’s GPS location and microphone sound capture, auXync dynamically adjusts the tower‑cam video stream to ensure accurate synchronisation as you move around the nearby area.
What auXync does:
• Shows a live video feed of the carillonist in the carillon tower, synced to what you hear.
• Uses your GPS location (with your permission) to calculate your distance from the instrument and adjust the video stream accordingly.
• Listens to music and sound signals through your microphone (with your permission) to fine‑tune the synchronisation.
• Displays the video feed either as a windowed (full‑screen) video or as a floating display in your physical space using AR technology.
• Lets the performer share song titles, composer and arranger details, which fade in and out elegantly as an overlay.
• Allows you to tap buttons to digitally "applaud" and "like" the performance at any time; your likes and applause add to a counter, visible to other connected users and to the performing artist in real time.
• Lets you shake your device to applaud.
• Works in both portrait and landscape modes.
• Streams video over a secure local Wi‑Fi network for accurate synchronisation; the video stream does not use mobile data.
