MarkUp 1.6.2 makes documents in more languages work properly, and brings Word documents and their equations much closer to how they were written. More languages • Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Russian, Greek, Thai, and more now open, display, and save correctly in every kind of file. • Files saved in older encodings, such as Shift JIS, GBK, Big5, or Windows Cyrillic and Arabic, are recognized automatically, including CSV files from spreadsheets. If a text file still looks wrong, choose Reopen with Encoding from its menu in the sidebar or on its name above the page, and pick the encoding that reads right. • Word and Rich Text documents keep their Asian and right-to-left fonts, and new text you type gets the right font for its script. • Right-to-left paragraphs line up correctly, and the cursor sits where it should, even on an empty line. • Word counts are correct in every script. • Bold and italics work next to Chinese and Japanese punctuation in Markdown. • Typing with a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean keyboard no longer breaks the word being composed. • Spell check follows the language of each paragraph. • Find ignores accents and full-width or half-width differences. • Screenplays recognize character names in scripts without capital letters. • LaTeX documents pick suitable fonts for their language automatically, and missing-character warnings are grouped into one clear note per line. Equations in Word documents • Equations are drawn the way they were written and saved exactly as they were, so opening and saving a document never changes its math. • Tap an equation to edit it right on the equation: type, use ^, _, and / for superscripts, subscripts, and fractions, and move between its parts with the arrow keys. • Insert a new equation from Insert, on its own line or inside a sentence. • Set an equation’s alignment in the Edit Equation window. • Symbols and structures are sorted into groups, with a search to find any of them. • Equations stay sharp in exported PDFs. Word documents • Each section keeps its own page size, margins, and orientation. Turn one page, one section, or selected text to landscape with Apply To in Page Layout. • First page and even page headers and footers can be edited, and headers and footers are kept exactly as they were. • Tabs, numbered lists that continue across the document, and table styles with header rows and banding now come through as written. • Paragraphs set to stay with the next one, or to keep their lines together, stay on the same page. • Typing inside fields, form controls, and commented text no longer loses them, and form check boxes now appear. • Centered pictures stay centered, and saved files stay small. • The Table tab opens on its own when the cursor is in a table, and shows the current borders and shading. • Signatures are inserted without a line under them. • The welcome guide is now a Word document. Markdown and LaTeX • Edit Table: when the cursor is in a table, a Table tab opens a grid to edit it in, with undo. • Column alignment now shows in the Markdown preview and carries over when converting to Word. • Pictures, included files, and bibliographies stored in iCloud download automatically when a document needs them. Also new • The app icon now supports dark mode!

CSV files MarkUp now works out whether a CSV file is separated by commas, semicolons, tabs, or pipes. If it guesses wrong, pick the right one in the Table tab, or type any other character. Each file remembers its choice, and the file itself is never changed. Converted copies • Pictures from a converted document are kept in MarkUp's own iCloud storage, instead of a new folder of images next to your file. • Deleting a copy that was kept updated now removes the copy mark from the original right away. • A file that is both linked to another file and kept updated now shows both marks in the sidebar. Also new • Jumping from the editor to the preview now takes you to the part you're reading, not to wherever the cursor was left. • MarkUp lets you know, once, when a new version is ready in the App Store. Mac • Fixed a crash that could happen when opening certain Word documents. • Markdown headings appear at full size as you type, instead of growing a moment later. • The export preview and Convert Format windows are now sized to fit what's in them. • Bug fixes and small UI improvements.

MarkUp 1.6 brings tools made for every kind of file you write in. Tabs, everywhere Word documents get Home, Insert, References and Review tabs, plus a Table tab while you’re in a table. Markdown and LaTeX get tabs too, as do Fountain, HTML, CSV, JSON, and YAML. On iPad, Mac, and an unfolded iPhone Duo, a compact header fits it all on one row, so more of the page stays in view. More file types, done properly • Rich Text (.rtf) opens on real pages and saves as real RTF. • CSV opens as a grid you can type in, with rows and columns you can add, delete and drag. • JSON and YAML are checked as you type, tidied with one tap and previewed as a tree. • HTML shows as a web page, closes tags for you and can run its JavaScript when you allow it. • Fountain screenplays get a screenplay preview, a scene list, character name suggestions and a starter template. Final Draft files open as screenplays, and you can convert between the two. • BibTeX files send their references to any document’s sources. Working across files • Word, Markdown, and LaTeX support creating tables and charts made by importing data from a CSV, JSON, or YAML file. Updating the data file automatically updates the chart or table in these files. • Include one Markdown file in another, or compile a whole folder into one document. • Converted copies can stay updated as you edit the original. So if you convert your LaTeX thesis into a Word file, and make edits to the LaTeX file, the Word file will automatically update with these edits. • Many new conversions between formats. Word documents Charts from data files, over 30 shapes you can wrap text around, page color, section breaks, table of contents designs, numbered captions, and signatures you can draw or type and keep for next time. Passwords for every file Lock any file with a password. It stays locked and encrypted on every device, and can’t be converted or copied. Also new • Settings now has a Help tab, with guides explaining the functionality of the app and what you can do with it. • Code color schemes, or pick your own colors in Settings. • The Sidebar and Settings have a new Search feature. • New devices can now pause and resume the LaTeX download. • On iPhone and iPad, converted copies are saved next to the original after a one-time permission. • Templates for web pages, data files and screenplays. • Fixes for long PDF exports, remembered reading places, scrolling, and other bug and UI fixes.

Working across devices - A document open on screen updates by itself a few seconds after it is edited on another device. Unsaved changes are never replaced. - A device still showing an old copy no longer saves over a newer one, so iCloud stops asking which version to keep. Exporting - The export sheet has one layout on every device: the format at the top, the preview below. - Each file offers PDF and its own type (Markdown as Markdown, Word as Word). - Page previews show one page at a time. Turn pages with the arrows, by tapping or clicking the left or right side, by swiping, or with ← and → keyboard keys. - A strip of page thumbnails, like the Preview app's, jumps straight to any page. Menus and UI - iPhone and iPad: menus and choosers have a solid background instead of glass, so they stay readable over photos. - Checkmarks sit on the right of the chosen option everywhere. This includes New File, Settings, fonts, paragraph styles, page sizes, page numbers and citation styles. - Other minor UI changes to make the app design more consistent throughout. Lists - Tab at the start of a list item makes it a sub-item; Shift-Tab moves it up a level. Tab anywhere else types a tab, as before. - Backspace at the start of a sub-item, or Return on an empty one, moves it up a level. At the top level it ends the list, as in Word. - Numbers update the moment an item changes level, and the text stays lined up with the items around it. - Deleting the first item of a numbered list renumbers the rest, in Markdown, plain text and Word documents. This also works when you delete several items in a row. - Word: one Undo brings back a deleted item with the list's original numbers. Word documents - Switching between one, two and three columns no longer deletes photos. - Tapping a heading in the outline now jumps to it on any page. - Mac: switching between Word documents returns you to where you were in each. - iPhone and iPad: editing a table cell no longer shifts its text and border upward. - Text typed below a text box goes back to the left margin. Markdown - Converting a Markdown document to Word keeps its photos. Before, they came through as file names or as empty boxes. - The preview's backlinks show only real [[links]] to the document. Plain mentions of its name are no longer listed as references. - iPhone and iPad: headings no longer flicker while you type. LaTeX - Tidy File (in the Insert menu) re-indents a whole .tex file by its structure: environments, groups and your own environment commands. Text inside verbatim blocks is left exactly as it is, and one Undo reverses it. Files and layout - Get Info has a new header: the file's icon, name and type, with its words, characters and lines. The duplicated Kind and extension rows are gone. - Each file remembers whether you last had it in Editor, Both or Preview. - Convert sheets show each file type with the same icon and color as the sidebar. - Settings › Documents › Default page size no longer lists sizes twice. - iPhone and iPad: Settings › General › Theme has more room between each mode's icon and its name.

Photos - Photos added from Photos, dragged in or pasted into a Markdown document are kept in MarkUp's iCloud storage, so they appear on all your devices. Photos that were only on one device are brought across the next time you open the document there. - Photos in exported PDFs are sized to fit the page. Markdown, LaTeX and text files - Comment and uncomment lines with ⌘/. - Indent and outdent several lines at once with Tab / Shift-Tab or ⌘] / ⌘[. - Both appear in Settings › Keyboard Shortcuts, where they can be changed. - Numbered lists renumber after you delete an item, and a single Undo restores it. - Text you type in a list no longer flashes in the accent colour. - The caret can be placed on the last line of a file again. - Text files keep their encoding (UTF-8 with or without BOM, UTF-16, Windows-1252) and their Windows line endings. - Line numbers line up in CSV and other text files. - Plain text files (.txt, .csv and others) get the formatting row, and their Insert menu offers what fits them. - Scripts inside a document never run in the preview. Word documents - Custom page sizes are kept instead of being changed to the nearest standard size. - Page color, hidden text, symbol characters, and right-to-left text survive editing and saving. - Numbered, lettered and roman lists renumber when an item is deleted or added. Your place in a file - Switch to another file and back, and you return to the same spot — page 4 stays page 4. - The editor and the preview each remember their own position, and switching between Editor, Both and Preview opens each exactly where it was, with no scroll from the top. Sidebar - Closing the sidebar now has a fluid animation, and your documents then glide into the extra space. "No file selected" slides into the middle too. - Mac: folders you collapse stay collapsed the next time you open MarkUp. - iPad: the sidebar keeps all its buttons at its narrowest. In a small window the extra buttons sit in a "…" menu that works and follows your accent color. - iPad: polished the sidebar's appearance when the app is in window mode, sepia mode separates the clock row in full screen, and the divider line no longer runs through the status bar. Split view (iPad and Mac) - Swapping two files by dragging a tab no longer flickers. - The tab you're not working in has a faint outline, and format badges sit evenly inside their tabs. - The second file's tab lines up correctly with the sidebar closed. Toolbar and layout - The Editor / Both / Preview buttons follow Settings › General › UI Size. - Mac: the file name stays centered with the sidebar closed, and the divider line under the top row lines up. - Mac: after switching Editor → Both → Editor, the caret stays visible and the text no longer starts cut off on the left. - Mac: Find in Preview puts the cursor in the search field straight away. Subscription - The free trial is shown first on the upgrade screen. - Opening the upgrade screen from Settings no longer says your free exports are used up.

MarkUp 1.5.1 EDITOR AND PREVIEW • Choose editor, preview, or both from a control in every file's own row — on iPhone, iPad and Mac. In split view each file keeps its own choice. • Drag the divider between editor and preview, and in split view each file has its own divider. • The row's buttons follow the UI size setting, and only the ones that apply to what's on screen are shown. LATEX • The engine download now stays visible until it's installed, shows its progress while you edit, and tells you when to reopen the app. WORD • The caret sits exactly on the line on Mac, before and after a click. • Zooming in on two pages side by side stays where you're looking. • Single or two pages is now a toggle next to the zoom controls. FIXES • Find in preview works on iPhone. • No more white flash on Mac when changing between editor and preview. • The sidebar button is left-aligned in full screen on Mac. • The preview's scroll indicator is visible in dark mode. • Bottom of the screen is filled on iPhone in light mode.

MarkUp 1.5 CONVERT • Convert between Markdown, Word and LaTeX. Open the Convert sheet and get a real copy in the other format, with the original kept beside it. (Pro) • Citations survive the trip between LaTeX and Word, in both directions. SPLIT VIEW • Two files side by side on iPad and Mac. Drag a file to the edge of the editor, or choose Open in Split View. What's New in 1.4.3 • Line breaks in Word documents. Press Option+Return, or choose Insert → Line Break, to start a new line inside the same paragraph. Word documents that already contain line breaks now open with them intact instead of splitting into separate paragraphs. • The Line Break shortcut can be changed in Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts. • Fixed: PDF exports for Word documents made while in Dark Mode could show table text in white. • Fixed: undoing an edit in a Markdown or LaTeX file did not always save. • Fixed: the text cursor in Word documents was hard to see in Dark Mode on Mac. • Fixed: keyboard shortcuts could not be adjusted on iPad.

Version 1.4 adds improvements to working with Word documents on MarkUp. Charts, shapes and text boxes. Insert real charts — column, bar, line, area, pie and scatter — and edit their data, colors, value labels and captions in place. Add text boxes and shapes and style them the same way. Anything you place can be dragged anywhere on the page, resized from any corner, and set side by side. Tables you can actually work in. Tap straight into a cell and type. Bold, italics, fonts, sizes, colours and highlights all apply inside the cell, with full undo — and bullets, shading and cell formatting survive saving and reopening. References that maintain themselves. Table of contents, captions and cross-references, citations and a works-cited list built from the citations you inserted. Footnotes and endnotes, with endnotes always on the last page. Comments and tracked changes. Read and reply to comments with your own name attached, and keep tracked changes intact through an edit and a save. More document formatting. Custom and named styles, multilevel and clause numbering, newspaper columns, per-section page numbering, headers and footers, equations, and smart typography. Pages that stay put. Documents lay out with matching character widths, so line breaks and page counts stay where the author put them.
