Vonk is a dating app made for the Afrikaans-speaking South African diaspora — for the people who carry padkos, heimwee, and an accent that turns heads abroad.
From Perth to Toronto, London to Houston, the community is big, but the kind of person who knows what a boerie-roll is and feels the same way when a Karen Zoid song comes on can still be hard to find. Vonk is built to make finding them easy.
The app is fully bilingual by design. Afrikaans is the default and English is available with a single tap on the welcome screen and again in settings — neither
language is buried in a menu, neither is treated as the afterthought. Profiles capture what actually matters when you have been away from home for a while: where in South Africa you grew up, how comfortable you still are with the taal, what you miss most, what you are looking for. The swipe deck respects your gender preferences and your distance, with cultural cues that go deeper than the usual hobby tags.
Beyond swiping, Vonk gives you ways to actually meet your matches in person. Real-world events near you show up in their own feed — braais in London, Karen Zoid tribute nights in Toronto, padkos picnics in Amsterdam, book clubs in Melbourne, hikes in Vancouver, rugby viewings in Sydney. If something is happening in your city, you will know.
Conversations support text, voice messages, photo sharing, and padkos-themed ice-breakers that move chats past the awkward hello. When you like someone, a chat opens straight away so the conversation can start without waiting on the other side. Safety is first-class: every profile, photo, and message can be reported, every user can be blocked, age verification gates signup, and content moderation runs continuously in the background so the community stays the community.
Vonk is free to use with daily limits on likes and messages. A monthly subscription called Vonk+ unlocks unlimited matches, advanced cultural filters, the compatibility quiz, voice messages, read receipts, travel mode for trips home, and a regular profile boost. The subscription auto-renews monthly and can be cancelled at any time through your App Store account, with a free trial when you start.
